We had just rushed out of the research facility’s main entrance when the scene before us made everyone gasp.
Outside was surrounded by a sea of zombies, at least a hundred in number.
It was almost impossible to reach where we had parked our vehicles.
Unless…
“I’ll lure the zombies away. You guys find a chance to escape!”
I said with determination in my eyes, stuffing the sample into the deputy’s hands,
instructing him to make sure it got back safely.
But the deputy grabbed my arm, his eyes full of hot tears:
“Alex, you can’t go! You’re a virologist, the base still needs you to develop the anti–virus
serum. If someone has to die today, it should be me!”
As we were arguing, Mia had somehow caught up with us.
Her face still streaked with tears, but her eyes were unusually resolute.
“I’ll go.”
Mia turned to me, the regret in her eyes almost overflowing:
“I’m sorry… I was so stupid, repeatedly hurting you all for the sake of that scumbag.”
With that, she unhesitatingly used the knife to slash a deep cut on her wrist.
The smell of blood quickly attracted the zombies.
Mia ran towards the distance, shouting loudly to draw the zombie horde’s attention.
We seized this opportunity to rush towards our vehicles, successfully escaping.
As we fled, I faintly heard Mia’s final apology:
“Alex, I’m sorry… you must… you must live on well!”
