Chapter 6

Sloane felt pure joy exploding in her chest.

So my text this morning was for real-I’d actually LEIT.

She tried to hide her smile, putting on a worried face instead.

“Finding her is definitely more important. Go ahead, Blake.”

Even though she was telling him to go find me, Sloane was secretly hoping Blake would never track me down.

Blake paused. He hadn’t expected Sloane to be so understanding, and guilt flickered across his face.

“Take care of yourself and the baby. Once I find Meredith, I’ll take you to Europe in a few days.”

With that, he rushed off.

On the drive home, he kept dialing that number he knew by heart, but all he got was the same cold automated message.

“Sorry, the number you’ve dialed is currently unavailable. Please try again later.”

After a dozen failed attempts, he finally gave up and floored the gas pedal. The car shot down the road like a bullet.

When he got home, Blake realized the house was even emptier than the staff had described. Even the bathroom only had one toothbrush cup left-his.

He was losing his mind with panic.

Meredith had taken every single thing that belonged to her. What did this MEAN? Was she planning to leave him?

All the staff stood before him, trembling. One brave soul stepped forward carefully.

“Sir, did you and Mrs. Donnelly have a fight? Maybe she’s just upset and left to cool off?”

“IMPOSSIBLE!”

Blake’s denial was immediate.

Ever since we’d gotten together, he’d always spoiled me. We’d never had a single real fight.

Besides, two days ago when he’d left, I hadn’t shown any signs of being upset.

Two days ago?!

Blake suddenly froze.

Two days ago, Sloane had come to the house. Had she figured out their relationship somehow?!

NO! Impossible!

He’d always been so careful, and their conversation had been in the back garden while she was eating breakfast. There was no way she could’ve found out!

After asking every friend who knew me and getting nowhere, Blake got even more frantic. He immediately ordered his assistant to search the entire city for any trace of me.

A whole night passed with nothing.

Blake sat on the couch all night like a statue.

He couldn’t figure out why I would just disappear without warning.

Just when he was about to call the police, his assistant rushed in with a phone.

“Mr. Donnelly, this is Mrs. Donnelly’s phone. We found it on the side of the road.”

Blake’s heart jumped into his throat.

The side of the road? Had enemies kidnapped Meredith?

He forced down his panic with shaking hands and turned on the phone.

When it unlocked, a text message stared him right in the face.
