Chapter 25
It sucked how I couldn’t even offer a word of consolation, only watching the sadness curl up inside her.
I blinked and everything cleared up.
And five seconds later, we heard the clicking sound of Mistress’s heels.
I sat up, tense.
I hadn’t thought about how much trouble I was in by carrying away one of their victims, but they probably saw it as me taking away their food before they were done eating, and those vampires had a thing about grudges.
I looked at Dorita and I knew even if I stopped the blood transfusion now, she’d be fine.
The door banged open, hitting the wall behind it as she angrily strutted in, her heels hitting the ground aggressively.
“What was the meaning of that stunt you pulled back there?!” She snapped at me while staring literal daggers into my eyes.
“The girl can’t talk; how do you expect her to reply to you?” Theodora answered, crossing her arms across her chest.
I could see she was a thorn in the Mistress’s side but she couldn’t take her out.
“You stay out of this! I won’t tolerate this insolence!”
“I can’t stay out of it, Liana, this girl was doing her job, and she is helping the kingdom by saving this girl. Didn’t you hear you weren’t getting any new blood slaves for another year?”
“None of that matters, she walked right in the middle of feeding vampires and carried away their food! The King is livid!”
*Shit!’ I muttered in my head, imagining my head on a pike at this point. There’s no way he’d be satisfied with just throwing me in prison this time around.
“And what do you plan to do with her?” Theodora asked her, her tone softer.
“Well, luckily for her, she’s quite useful, so you’re going to clear the entire ballroom and make sure everything is sparkling clean afterward. All the other servants are out of it so that’s your punishment. Make sure you’re there in thirty minutes,” she finished and turned around, heading out of the room.
1 breathed deeply, relieved.
It was a lot of work, quite alright but I preferred that over having to physically face the King’s wrath.
Besides, if I got too tired, I’ll simply faint and they’ll carry me out for Theodora to rescue me again.
Not the end of the world, if you ask me.
“I think she’ll be fine now. I don’t want you giving her too much so you don’t faint while doing all that work,” she said to me. The woman’s motherly nature made me feel emotions I’d long buried and I simply wanted to hug her. But I held myself at bay, smiling at her instead.
She took out the needles from our skin, pouring disinfectant on Dorita’s arm while I did the same with mine.
“I’ll go get you something to eat so you can get going. I don’t want that skeleton back in my kitchen,” she said, walking away as I chuckled.
That kind of hurt so I stopped immediately.
I ate the food she brought for me quickly, struggling with the drama going on in my throat. I would normally take a while before I finished but I didn’t want the Mistress to be back here and not just because Theodora was irritated by her.

Chapter 25
What saved me was my work ethic and I planned to keep going that route.
Hopefully, if I could get them to trust me like they trust Theodora, running away would be a lot easier.
Hopefully that happens sooner rather than later because the sight I witnessed as I got back to the ballroom was enough to make me faint.
