Chapter 10
For example, she was here in the clinic, playing the role of dutiful concubine and attending to my fathers son. But anyone with clear eyes could see how scared she was of him throwing her out of the palace soon, thus her desperate act of trying to latch onto the next royal.
The jokes on her; I share everything with my brother, and I definitely do not want my father’s vomit, so she’s getting nowhere near him.
“Leave,” I commanded her, not in the mood to be irritated any further.
“But my Prince, 1-”
“Don’t make me say it again. I won’t do that with my lips,” I cut her off, my voice as harsh as I wanted it to be.
The result was instantaneous as the only sign of her presence afterwards was the door flinging shut from the impact of her speed.
I went closer to Reed, looking him over to see if I could figure this thing out.
He was still wearing the pajamas he slept with the other day because we were always scared of contaminating anything else while under the effect of the virus. His body was hot, and I could tell he was having those nightmares that one could never remember the details of, but the fear and pain were etched on our minds.
Usually, other people had to endure seeing us like this so this was the first time I was forced to watch the effects of the virus on someone that meant anything to me.
Reed and I had a different bond than normal twins in any other species. We were different from each other in every way but at the end of the day, we’d die for each other if need be. We shared everything, even the same bed without it being awkward.
The first time he threw a tantrum and slept in another room, we both couldn’t sleep until he came back, and with no words exchanged between us, he crawled back to bed.
I watched him groan in pain and I remembered how it felt the first time I had the experience.
We’d gone to a human rave when I felt it; pain, unlike anything I’ve ever felt.
As a vampire royal, son to the king of our entire species, pain was a foreign concept to me.
But that night, I actually cried.
And then I exchanged looks with my brother and I realized we needed to get out of there immediately. We might have the most peaceful monarchical system among the rest of the supernatural species but we weren’t short of enemies.
If we were seen in such a vulnerable situation, we definitely wouldn’t have come out alive.
So we got into a random car and drove off, something we rarely did. With the pain gradually crippling my joints, it was only a matter of time before we had an accident.
But we’d already called for help, and Father got us out of there immediately, or so I was told, because we actually blacked out.
When we finally woke up, that was when he told us about the virus and how he’d been trying to keep it under wraps for years without any solution.
But now, watching the pain attack Reed, I decided I was going to focus my attention on this disease.
If it meant being dissected and probed for the scientists to figure out what made my case different, I’m ready for it.
I changed the cold towel on his forehead and reinforced the shackles used to strap him down before heading out to see my father.
We had to do something about this urgently instead of throwing that damn party.
