Chapter6
To ensure Maria’s safety?
Eveline couldn’t even define the feeling surging through her–it was too tangled.
All she knew was that, somehow, she wanted to laugh.
Should she feel humiliated that he’d stooped this low? Or grateful she’d uncovered the truth before the
wedding?
She took a long breath and glanced at the cast and crew around them. In the end, she nodded.
She’d taken command not just to honor her father, but to prevent tragedy.
Even if it meant helping the woman who stood on the opposite side of everything.
She geared up quickly, frowning slightly at the map the crew had brought.
It was clearly just something pulled off the internet and printed.
Oversimplified, missing crucial topographic detail. Definitely not field–ready.
Still, she packed a basic set of tools and made the decision to scout the cave alone before anything else.
But just as she was about to step inside, a familiar voice called out from behind.
“Eveline, wait…”
Adrian.
Now he cares? A little too late for that.
She didn’t even flinch. Didn’t turn around. Just kept walking and disappeared into the mouth of the cave.
The storm from last night had left the cavern damp and cold. Her leg began to throb with every step.
The beam from her headlamp only lit a narrow path ahead. With one hand on the rock wall and the other
gripping the useless map, she moved slowly, carefully.
But she didn’t get far before chaos followed.
A flurry of footsteps. Barking.
Then out of nowhere, a huge white dog barreled into her, knocking her off balance.

Caught off guard, Eveline stumbled and hit the ground hard.
“Eveline?”
Maria’s anxious voice echoed from the cave entrance, snapping Eveline to attention. She tightened her
grip on the dog, which was still tugging toward the deeper tunnels, and turned just in time to stop Maria
from stepping inside.
But before she could say a word, a figure rushed in.
The terrain was uneven, slick from last night’s rain.
In the next heartbeat, that figure stumbled hard–falling, fast, directly toward her.
Muscle memory trumped thought–she lunged forward on instinct, catching the falling woman and taking
the full brunt of the impact herself.
For a moment, there was only the thud of bodies hitting damp stone.
Then Maria sat up, dazed but unhurt.
“… Are you alright?” she asked, breathless.
Adrian appeared seconds later, clearly panicked.
But before he could speak, Maria’s voice trembled with accusation.
“Eveline, why did you push me?”
Eveline froze.
“You know how dangerous this cave is,” Maria whimpered. “One wrong step could have been…”
“I didn’t,” Eveline cut in, eyes narrowing.
“Eveline, you…”
Maria didn’t seem interested in arguing. The moment Eveline denied it, she sniffled softly, her eyes
glistening with tears.
“If Eveline says she didn’t, then I must have imagined it. It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have run in.”
Eveline clenched her fists. The pressure building in her chest felt unbearable, but she swallowed it down.
and kept her voice steady.
“Next time, leash your dog properly. Or someone really might get hurt.”

But Adrian’s voice cut through the tension like a blade.
“Enough. Have you made your point?”
Eveline stiffened.
So that’s what he thought–that she was lashing out over jealousy?
That she, a trained rescuer, would deliberately push someone just to make a scene?
Was he insane–or did he just think she was?
“Adrian, don’t blame Eveline. Maybe… maybe she just didn’t see me in the dark….” Maria added softly, her voice soaked with victimhood. “It hurts…”
Eveline couldn’t see their faces in the dark, but Maria’s tone said it all.
And Adrian took the bait.
He scooped Maria into his arms without a second thought, leaving without even glancing back.
Eveline was left behind,
Alone in the damp, pitch–black cave. Bruised. Bleeding.
The rope leash from Maria’s dog–still clutched in her hand–had torn open her half–healed wounds again.
She bit back a gasp, her jaw trembling as the cold seeped through her jacket.
She waited. Then slowly, painfully, pulled herself to her feet.
Her headlamp had cracked in the fall. Useless now.
But she’d only gone a short distance. With effort, she retraced her steps and eventually found her way
back to the entrance.
Outside, the set was already being torn down.
Everyone had left.
Eveline stood there for a long moment, cradling the squirming Samoyed in her arms.
Her phone buzzed with messages from the rescue team–friendly chatter, wondering where she was.
She stared at the screen, fingers poised, but in the end, she didn’t explain. Just said something had come
up and promised to meet them another day.

Then, she called Martin.
A breeze swept through the clearing. Cold. Sharp.
She curled up beneath a tree, exhaustion pressing down on her like a wave.
By the time Martin arrived, she was barely conscious.
His heart clenched at the sight of her–soaked, shivering, battered.
He rushed to her side, stripped off her soaked coat, and wrapped his own jacket around her trembling
frame.
The cuts on her hands and arms told a story she hadn’t shared.
And as he gently pulled her closer, fury boiled beneath his calm exterior.
And in that moment, he knew–helping his dear nephew behind the scenes had been the right decision.
Adrian didn’t deserve her. Not then. Not ever.
