Chapter 4
“Eveline, what’s going on..?”
Adrian stood frozen at the doorway, staring at the half–packed suitcase and the nearly empty closet. Panic rose in his chest like a tide he couldn’t hold back
In truth, he’d sensed something was off the moment she hadn’t replied to his message right away.
Normally, no matter how busy she was, Eveline always responded within five minutes.
He hadn’t even bothered to check on Maria. He’d just rushed home–only to find this.
Had she found out?
No–if she knew, she wouldn’t be this calm. But if she didn’t… why the suitcase?
His thoughts spun. Just as he opened his mouth to probe, Eveline turned around with a soft smile.
“Work’s been light lately. Once the wedding’s over, I thought maybe we could take a trip–just the two of us. Clear our minds and relax”
Adrian’s breath caught for a moment, then he let out a relieved laugh and nodded. “You’ve been working way too hard. Yeah, a break sounds perfect.”
Eveline could almost laugh at how easily she saw through him.
He was planning to vanish, fake his death, and leave her behind. Why would it matter to him if she took a
Or maybe… even betrayal had to be clean. Maybe he just didn’t want Maria labeled the other woman. If
Eveline left first, it would be easier for him to claim innocence.
Even if her heart had already begun to detach, seven years left deep marks.
A chill spread in her chest. She turned away, unwilling to say more.
Adrian, unaware of the shift in her expression, softened his tone again. “Sorry you had to come home
alone in the rain. Did you get soaked? Is your leg hurting?”
She shook her head, her smile gentle, her gaze flat. She sidestepped his attempt to touch her.
I’m alright. You’re the one who’s drenched. Go take a hot shower before you catch a cold.”
He chuckled, ruffling her hair out of habit, and headed into the bathroom.

The moment he was out of sight, Eveline opened her phone and typed a message to Martin.
“Sorry, he came home suddenly. I’ll finish packing another day.”
Martin’s car was still parked just outside. He’d seen Adrian rushing in.
Watching the villa lights flicker on, his gaze dimmed, but he replied steadily.
“No worries. After the dress fitting, we’ll pack together.”
“One more thing–what’s your ring size?”
“I hate leaving all the planning to you alone.. At the very least, I want to show a little sincerity. Enough to
convince your grandfather to believe I’ll take care of you.”
Eveline’s chest ached–this time, with something gentler.
A small, involuntary smile curved her lips.
She was just about to respond when Adrian returned.
Startled, she quickly turned off her screen and looked up, her voice light. “Didn’t you go take a shower?
What are you doing back?”
“…Nothing. I forgot my pajamas.”
Was it her imagination?
Adrian couldn’t shake a strange feeling creeping in. Her gaze had shifted, as if hiding something.
But then he brushed it off. Maybe she was planning a surprise for him. After all, the wedding was only days
away.
Even if he wouldn’t be there.
The thought brought back a wave of guilt.
He rushed through his shower. When he came back out and saw her lying in bed, back to him, he slid in
beside her and wrapped his arms around her, hoping that physical closeness might ease his guilt.
“Eveline…”
She didn’t answer.
She wasn’t pretending–she was truly asleep.

… Of course. She’d been juggling work and wedding prep for weeks. Exhaustion was only natural.
He sighed and gently brushed her damp hair off her face.
If Maria hadn’t come back into his life…
Maybe he really could’ve fallen for Eveline.
But love had a way of anchoring itself to the past.
From the very beginning, he’d gotten close to Eveline only to throw off his father’s suspicion. She was a smokescreen–meant to protect Maria from being pressured or discredited.
The rain pounded outside, keeping Adrian awake.
He remembered how much pain Eveline endured on rainy nights. Quietly, he sat up and began to massage
her injured leg.
Eveline stiffened the moment he touched her.
She hadn’t fallen asleep at all. She just couldn’t bring herself to touch him anymore.
And yet, in this fleeting moment, a small part of her wished time could stop right here.
Because in this moment… maybe, just maybe, he cared.
The illusion didn’t last.
The phone rang sharply, slicing through the quiet. Adrian froze.
He glanced at her, still “asleep,” then answered the call.
“The rain’s really pouring tonight,” a woman’s voice chimed brightly through the speaker.
It was Maria–her voice pouring through the line like ice water over Eveline’s skin.
The fragile warmth she’d clung to disappeared instantly.
She didn’t want to listen. She shifted under the blanket, trying to shut them out.
But Maria’s next words pierced straight through her skin:
“Do you remember three years ago? The day we had that date, and it started pouring out of nowhere? The rain was just like this.”
“I still feel bad when I think about it. If you hadn’t come to see me that day, Eveline wouldn’t have
