Chapter2
For a heartbeat, Eveline almost believed he might deny it. That small hope could have let her pretend it
was all a cruel joke.
“Of course,” Adrian answered. “I’ll depart right after the wedding.”
Not a flicker of hesitation. He looked straight into her eyes, spinning his lie with devastating sincerity- shattering her last fragile hope.
“Eveline, you sacrificed your place on the rescue team for me. Let me repay that debt.”
Repay her?
She stayed silent, bitterness swelling like a physical ache in her chest.
So this was all her leg was worth to Adrian.
Worthless enough to be “repaid” with a flimsy, transparent lie.
He planned to fake his death and abandon her at their own wedding. Yet here he stood, putting on this flawless act, dangling false hope in front of her.
Had she not uncovered his scheme, she’d have spent a lifetime shackled by grief and guilt.
Why?
He knew the depth of her love.
He knew her grandfather was dying–that seeing her happy was the old man’s final wish.
He knew the desert and her injury were open wounds that would never heal.
That desert took her father.
Her injury stole her career and any chance of finding her father herself.
None of it mattered to him.
He was willing to twist the knife deeper.
A light rain began to fall. A thousand words caught in Eveline’s throat, escaping only as a hollow laugh.
“…Thank you, Adrian.”
The ring had already dug so deep into her palm that it drew blood.

She sat in the passenger seat and loosened her grip, quietly, almost reluctantly.
But the ring still rested in her hand, refusing to fall away.
Or perhaps she was the one refusing to let go.
Seven years pressed on her chest, heavy enough to keep her rooted in place.
How could she accept that the man she’d loved completely… never truly cared for her?
The sudden ring of her phone shattered the silence in the car.
Adrian glanced at the screen, answered instantly, and offered her a practiced, apologetic smile.
“Sorry. Work emergency. Just a moment.”
Eveline knew. Ice spread through her veins, but she nodded.
Only three days remained.
If Adrian wanted this charade, she’d play her part–preserving the final shred of dignity between them.
In three days, he’d vanish. She’d marry another. Their paths would never cross again.
The door had barely clicked shut when a woman’s soft sobbing spilled through the speakers.
“Adrian…”
“I know it’s Eveline’s birthday… I shouldn’t call… But Muffin’s run off. Please, help me find him?”
“If the rain gets worse… he’s so small… What if he…”
Eveline went still, her gaze snapping to Adrian just outside.
Oblivious to the Bluetooth, he stood in the drizzle, his voice soft and reassuring as he comforted the
woman on the phone.
He returned moments later, regret etched on his face.
“Eveline, I’m sorry. A crisis at the office. Could you take a cab? I need to handle this.”
Of course.
She’d braced for it. Yet when it happened, the raw hurt still overwhelmed all reason.
Why?

Why did her devotion mean nothing?
Why was she worth less to him than his lover’s dog?
She opened her mouth–then closed it. No more self–inflicted humiliation. A silent nod.
“Go. Handle your crisis.”
The ring–never hers–slipped from her fingers, vanishing beneath the passenger seat.
Adrian didn’t notice. He offered a distracted reassurance and sped away,
The rain intensified.
The surgical steel plate in her leg throbbed in the damp cold. Rainwater seeped into the cut on her palm-
a sharp, biting agony.
Eveline walked slowly along the roadside, the downpour dragging her back three years…
Adrian had vanished while caving alone.
The rain that day was a torrent. Ignoring the rescue team’s orders, she’d scaled the treacherous slope, waded into the flooding cave, and screamed his name into the suffocating darkness until her voice gave
out.
She remembered little after that–waking bandaged, bones broken, her hands a mess of raw, open
wounds. Some gashes reached bone.
Yet learning Adrian was safe erased all pain.
She’d never feared physical hurt.
So why did this hurt so much?
The sting rose behind her nose, but no tears came.
Only the falling rain struck her cheeks, harder with each drop.
She realized then: she’d buried her grief after her parents died. Locked it away.
Had that made Adrian believe she was unbreakable?
She was only human. She needed to crumble, to let the tears fall–but there was no one left to hold space
for it.
“Eveline!”

Martin’s voice cut through the rain. She turned–and was pulled into a solid embrace.
He stood breathless, jacket missing, dress shirt plastered to his skin by rain. He’d clearly run straight from his office upon getting her message.
He asked nothing but understood everything. Simply held her–an anchor in the storm.
Tears slipped down her cheeks before she even realized.
She looked up at the man standing before her, and at last, made up her mind.
“Martin… will you marry me?”
