Behind me, Damian suddenly shouted my name.
I turned back, only to see Damian pull a revolver from somewhere. His voice was hoarse and breaking as he roared at me, “It’s fine. It’s okay! Claire, if we can’t live together, then let’s die together!”
However, before he could raise the gun, a silenced shot rang out.
The bullet hit his chest squarely, and Damian collapsed to the ground, not knowing what had happened.
This time, there was no one to shield him from the bullet.
A calm voice crackled through the earpiece in my ear, “Target eliminated. Threat neutralized.”
Damian clutched his bleeding chest, whispering over and over as blood bubbled from his lips, “Claire, I love you. I love you…”
I crouched slightly and spoke in a soft voice, “No. Whatever that was… it wasn’t love.”
Fortunately, it was all part of a staged wedding–an elaborate setup. Aside from Justin’s most trusted men, no one had witnessed the twisted farce.
I tightened my grip on Justin’s hand and walked away without looking back.
Inside the church, the crucifix loomed silently over the chaos.
Outside, the warm and golden sunlight poured gently over us.
From somewhere above, I heard the soft flutter of doves taking flight.
Free from the shadows of the past, I could finally walk toward true happiness.
