Chapter 6
Samuel took Tiffany’s case.
As soon as he got home, he brought it up:
“Tiffany wants me to represent her in this lawsuit. She spent the whole time going through her entire story from the past few years, which is why I missed the movie.”
“She’s really in a tough spot. She thought she could finally settle down and live a peaceful life, but then she ended up with that kind of family…”
‘But Ava, if you’re not comfortable with it, I can turn it down.”
As he spoke, he took another step closer to me.
The nausea hit me again, and I couldn’t help but say directly. “That perfume smell on you is pretty strong.”
His expression froze, and he immediately explained:
Tiffany’s heel broke, so I gave her a hand.”
I’ll go shower right now.”
Two days later.
The admin girl came by with a stack of contracts to be stamped. I glanced casually and saw Tiffany’s contract on top.
But the representing attorney field was blank.
asked: “Has this case been signed?”
Mr. Carter said he’d fill in the signature later,” she explained, then added, “But the client has already paid the legal fees.”
nodded.
Samuel made a point of coming to see me that afternoon.
He even brought a tablet with the preliminary case materials, looking very serious.
Ava, she can’t keep dragging this out. Someone needs to take charge and help her cut through this mess quickly.”
Samuel, I didn’t know you were not just a lawyer, but also a magician.”
He looked confused. “What?”
couldn’t help but laugh.
‘Isn’t it all right there in the background check?”
The company, the properties–everything’s in his parents‘ names. Even the husband gets his money from a trust fund.”
“Lucky for Tiffany she quit working after marriage, or she’d have to split half her income too.”

For a case like this, she’s still insisting on paying top dollar to hire you. So tell me, do you really know some magic tricks?”
Samuel’s face went pale.
He looked at me:
“Ava, I haven’t signed yet.”
If you’re really upset about this, I can pass it to another colleague.”
“But don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. I promise you, it’s just work.”
I smiled slightly.
Just listen to him.
From “I can turn it down” at the beginning, to now I can pass it to another colleague.”
The difference speaks for itself.
And apparently the handover only happens if I’m really upset about it
I waved my hand and replied gently
“Just kidding, don’t take it seriously.”
“She’s already paid up, so might as well sign it.”
“Revenue is revenue for our firm.”
Tiffany started coming to the law firm frequently.
At first, she would greet me or specifically mention that if I wasn’t comfortable, I could join her in Samuel’s office to listen in.
After I politely declined several times, she would just stand across from me, give me a slight nod, then turn and walk right into his
office.
I looked up.
The glass door across from me was tightly shut.
Faint sounds of quiet laughter drifted out, with drawn–out tones that were quite alluring.
I got up and went to the conference room–today was our regular meeting day.
After reviewing this month’s cases, a colleague asked: “Ava, where’s Sam? How come he’s not here? I wanted to pick his brain about a
case.”
I said: “He’s busy.”
The colleague just said “oh,” then smiled:
“Ava, you absolutely nailed that last case. I read the judgment–the husband didn’t get a single advantage. It’s probably the most satisfying divorce case we’ve had in years, right?”

“That case was indeed typical. I can organize the details and share them in the group later.”
“Oh wow, thank you so much! I was really hoping to learn from it.”
Samuel happened to walk in just then.
“Learn what? Ava, how come no one told me about the meeting?”
Before I could respond, the colleague laughed: “Ava said you were busy.”
Samuel froze.
The colleague slapped his forehead:
‘We were just studying Ava’s brilliant case example.”
‘Oh right, Sam, didn’t you just take on a new divorce case too? You should check out the group materials–might come in handy!”
Samuel looked at me hesitantly.
I smiled slightly.
‘Mr. Carter’s case is high–complexity. I’m afraid it wouldn’t apply.”
