Chapter 5
When customers come to the door, there’s no reason not to receive them.
When I finished my meeting and returned to my office, she was standing in front of the achievement wall by the entrance.
It was covered with the firm’s history, attorney profiles, and various certificates of honor.
Tiffany was looking up, her gaze scanning each item one by one.
Finally, she stopped and stared intently at one particular spot.
It was the partners‘ page.
Samuel’s photo was displayed in the most prominent position, with a string of honors and awards listed under his name.
I stood behind her for several minutes before she snapped back to reality.
I got straight to the point:
“Ms. Hart, what brings you here today?”
She smiled at me with her eyes.
“You’re so clever, Mrs. Carter–care to guess why I’m here?”
I said matter–of–factly:
“This is a law firm. Obviously you’re here because you need legal representation.”
“You’re not here for sightseeing, are you?”
The smile in her eyes gradually turned cold.
“Yes.”
“But I have to ask–does Mrs. Carter personally handle every single divorce case at this firm?”
I leaned back in my chair, quietly studying her.
Today she wore a rose–red slip dress. Compared to her subtle makeup that night, the bold color was quite striking.
Her movements carried the obvious scent of perfume.
I smiled slightly:
“Divorce isn’t that complicated–clear facts, simple assets.”
“Any of the lawyers on that wall you just looked at could handle it.”
She stared directly into my eyes: “What about Mr. Carter?”
I pointed toward the door:

“Samuel’s office is across the hall.”
“But he’s in a meeting right now. You’ll have to wait
Thank you, Mrs. Carter.” Tiffany tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. “But I already made an appointment with the front desk.”
At 4:30, Samuel returned to his office.
The front desk must have given him a heads up, because he didn’t look particularly surprised when he saw Tiffany.
He walked over to me first: “Ava, wait for me. We’ll leave at five sharp.”
I nodded.
We had a 6 PM movie date.
Tiffany followed Samuel into his office.
To protect client privacy, consultations usually meant closing the door automatically.
I saw Samuel hesitate for a moment, then chose to leave the door slightly ajar.
Low conversation drifted over–mostly Tiffany talking, with Samuel occasionally asking questions.
I didn’t bother listening closely and used the time to review my work.
At 5 PM, the system reminded me to clock out.
I glanced across the hall–they still weren’t finished.
Colleagues gradually left for the day, and the receptionist thoughtfully asked if I needed dinner ordered for overtime.
I smiled and shook my head, “No need, I’m leaving soon.”
At 5:30, the door across from me had somehow closed.
Tiffany’s rose–red silhouette was reflected in the glass, looking even more vibrant under the bright lights.
At 5:40, I packed up and left, driving to the movie theater.
Samuel didn’t show up.
But throughout the movie, my phone kept buzzing with messages and calls.
Annoyed, I switched to airplane mode.
Peace at last.
After the movie ended, I followed the crowd toward the exit and spotted Samuel standing at the entrance, his gaze cutting through the sea of people to find me.
He stepped forward, his voice rushed and flustered:
“Ava, I swear I didn’t mean to stand you up. I lost track of time and then I couldn’t get through to you.”
“I drove here as fast as I could, but they said I was 20 minutes late and wouldn’t let me in, so I’ve just been waiting out here for you.”

A faint fragrance wafted from him.
Fighting back nausea, I cut him off: “Let’s go home first.”
