Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I hadn’t really wanted to attend Samuel’s college reunion. I had some unfinished work sitting on my desk and was planning to put in
some overtime.
Besides, these kinds of gatherings are prime territory for bumping into old flames and rekindling past connections.
I’d be in the way there.
Samuel couldn’t help but laugh
“Ms. Sterling, you’re more devoted to work than to your own husband, but you make it sound so sweet–no wonder you’re the star
attorney at our firm.”
“Everyone’s bringing their spouse. We’re all living our best lives now–only good times ahead, no room for old drama.”
“Come on, do me a favor and come with me?”
I rolled my eyes, half–amused. The work wasn’t that urgent anyway, so I changed clothes and headed out with him.
Little did I know how prophetic my words would be.
At the reunion, we actually did run into Samuel’s first love–Tiffany Hart
Tiffany had been Samuel’s college girlfriend. They were the perfect couple back then, everyone’s favorite love story on campus.
After graduation, Tiffany started working while Samuel went on to grad school.
Graduation season is always breakup season.
Plus, law school kept Samuel buried in books–he couldn’t even guarantee the most basic time to be with her.
Tiffany quickly found herself a new boyfriend.
Word was he was the boss’s son at her company.
I never knew if Samuel had been heartbroken over it at the time.
But whenever he mentioned that relationship later, it was always just a casual “we wanted different things.”
So how could this lost young love not remain that untouchable dream in his heart?
Tiffany looked a bit thinner now, her porcelain skin lightly made up, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders. Still a beauty.
But she came alone.
Some classmate curiously asked about the “bringing your other half plan–where was her husband?
Tiffany just smiled without answering.
I glanced up at Samuel. He was busy peeling shrimp for me. When he heard the question, he even shared a smile with me–completely unfazed.
After a few rounds of drinks, the atmosphere grew lively.

Chapter 1
The conversations kept branching out in different directions.
Some people were networking and recommending job opportunities, while others discreetly exchanged business cards.
We were all adults in our thirties now–the rules of how society works were second nature to us.
Those intense college friendships and the casual mention of “spouses” had become the perfect currency for resource exchange.
Only Tiffany sat alone in the corner, looking somewhat uncomfortable.
After years of living the pampered life, she was probably out of touch with these kinds of conversations.
Someone walked over with a drink, half–joking:
“Word is, our campus queen here married into a powerful family! Too bad you didn’t bring your husband tonight–otherwise, us regular folks might’ve had the chance to get a little help from the heir of a big family.”
Tiffany fell silent for a long moment before picking up her glass and downing it in one go.
Her eyes were red–rimmed, and even her voice was shaking.
“I’m afraid I won’t be much help to anyone. I’m… I’m planning to get divorced.”
