I asked hoarsely, “Where’s Mia?”
His body stiffened, then he picked up his phone and said:
“According to plan, she should be home by now. Don’t worry, I’ll call the housekeeper right away.”
After a few rings, the housekeeper’s tearful voice came through.
“Young master, where have you been?”
“The police called and said the young miss was killed. Is it true?”
The color drained from Lucas’s face, his fingers starting to tremble.
“Mrs. Wilson, stop acting. I’ve made up with my wife.”
He looked at me pleadingly, wanting me to tell him this was just a joke.
Just a ploy to make him care.
But I knew my daughter had been killed by her irresponsible father.
Lucas had never been so afraid before. Overwhelming panic enveloped his entire body.
Making him tremble uncontrollably, falling.
Like when he was five years old, participating in heir training, hunting shirtless on a snowy
mountain.
That year he felt the world was so cold. Cold enough to make him regret being born. Cold enough to
make him hate living in such a family every moment of his life thereafter.
He had never felt love until Olivia Sanders appeared. Only then did he know what love was.
She was a beam of light, a spark of fire, bringing warmth.
They were like small trees swaying in the wind and rain, holding each other tightly for warmth.
She understood his loneliness; he gave her the shelter of a home.
But what he couldn’t accept was that she changed.
He was already fighting his family, yet she showed up pregnant, standing behind him just like the
women who often appeared in his family.
At that moment, he felt betrayed by the whole world.
Even the woman he loved turned out to be no different from those other women.
So he ran away. He loved Olivia Sanders deeply, but couldn’t accept her scheming.
He came back when the child was born. So small and soft, he didn’t dare touch her.
But thinking about the cruel heir training she would undergo, he ran away again.
A child not acknowledged by the family head had no right to be an heir.
<
So he pretended not to care, never daring to show affection for Mia in front of her.
Afraid the family would think he favored the child and, by extension, the wife he loved.
“Sir, what are you saying? We are absolutely loyal to you.”
“We didn’t act anything out with the madam.”
His vision went black as he collapsed by the bed.
“Where are the bodyguards? The ones I assigned to protect Mia?”
“Have them report back immediately!”
His roar frightened Mrs. Wilson, who stammered:
“Sir, those bodyguards left with the young miss. They haven’t come back yet.”‘
Only now did Lucas believe that something may have really happened to our daughter.
He gripped my hand, his voice filled with unprecedented panic.
“Olivia, it’s okay. Claire definitely wouldn’t dare do anything. They must just be late coming back from playing. I’ll have her bring the child back right away.”
His fingers trembled as he dialed the number.
“Lucas, darling, you finally remembered little old me.”
“Where should we meet today? I bought that bunny lingerie you like so much. Want me to wear it for you?”
Lucas felt like his scalp was about to explode.
“Claire Lin, what are you saying in front of the child? If Mia hears you, I won’t let you off.”
She pouted coquettishly. “Why are you so angry?”
“She’s not here. We can say whatever we want.”
Lucas’s scalp tingled. “Didn’t I tell you to take Mia out? Where is she now?”
Claire was unhappy with his attitude.
“Don’t you miss me at all?”
“I’ll ask one more time. Where is Mia?” His voice was angry now, making Claire not dare to trifle with
him anymore.
“I-I don’t know,” she said tearfully.
“You took Mia away and you say you don’t know?”
“That little… little girl didn’t want to come with me, so I let her go home.”
Lucas frowned. “When did she go back? Mrs. Wilson said she hasn’t seen Mia!”
Claire tried her usual tricks of seduction again.
This time Lucas hung up the phone.
“Olivia, don’t worry. We’ll know soon!’
I stared out the window silently. What was the use of him doing this now? Instead of putting on an act for me, he should let me go find our daughter.
My eyes stung as tears flowed uncontrollably.
Soon after, the gaudily dressed Claire was dragged in by security.
“What are you doing? I’m Mr. Shaw’s lover. He won’t let you off if he finds out!”
Claire cursed and swore. When she saw Lucas’s gloomy face as she entered, she put on a fawning
smile.
“Darling, you could have just called if you wanted to see me.””
Lucas grabbed her hair, asking through gritted teeth:
“I’ll ask you one more time. Where is my daughter?”
Claire was frightened and immediately burst into tears.
“I-I really don’t know! Lucas, you have to believe me, I really don’t know!”
He flung her down violently. Claire fell at my feet.
She glared at me hatefully.
“Are you using the child to get attention again? A scheming bitch like you doesn’t deserve Lucas.””
I looked at her calmly, my heart like dead ashes.
“Are you sure you don’t know?”
From the moment I saw that video, I knew my little Mia was likely in grave danger.
This woman had warned me before.
The first time, she sent me many razor blades.
The second time, she skinned the puppy Mia and I were raising together.
The third time, she said she would take my daughter’s life. How could I not believe her?
Leaning against the bed, the anesthesia hadn’t worn off yet, but my whole body was already starting
o ache.
Claire’s eyes shifted guiltily, not daring to look at me.
“Lucas, I was just trying to help by taking the child out. But with her attitude, I feel so hurt.””
“You know I love babies the most. Mia is so adorable, I’d never throw her in the sea!”
She suddenly covered her mouth, but it was too late.
Lucas kicked her to the ground, stomping viciously on her chest as if he wanted to crush her to
death.
“You bitch, what the hell did you do? Talk!”
