He looked at me coldly, sneering, “Did Olivia Sanders put you up to this act?”

“What a coincidence that you call right after I made a call. My daughter is perfectly fine.”

Lucas stepped on my wrist, pressing down hard with his toe.

I winced in pain, but my worry for our child outweighed the physical pain.

“Lucas Shaw, I didn’t set this up. Mia is really in trouble. Please go save her!”

He continued grinding down impatiently.

“Olivia Sanders, how many times have I told you not to use our daughter as an excuse?”

“First it was thunder, then fear of the dark. Now you’re going too far.”

“How can you joke about a child’s safety?”

“If anything really happens to Mia, I’ll be the first one to not let you

off.”

My heart was in knots. My legs were trapped in the car, my upper body on the ground.

One hand was still pinned under his foot.

“I didn’t set this up. I’m not lying.

“Just believe me this once, please.”

Lucas’s eyes were full of disappointment.

“Using your own child as leverage – how are you any different from that bloodsucking mother of yours?”

My heart ached. He knew I hated my mother.

She never loved me, and I’ve always hated her.

His expression was cold. Those closest to you know how to hurt you the most.

Just then, the police officer’s voice came through the phone.

“I’m sorry, is this Mr. Lucas Shaw? This is the police station. Mia’s classmate’s mother reported it.”

“We couldn’t reach her mother, so we called you instead.”

“We really are the police.”

Only then did Lucas start to believe that something might have happened to our daughter.

He moved his foot and walked to the side to take the call,

“What do you mean? How could my daughter be at the seaside?”

The other person said something, and Lucas’s expression grew increasingly grim.

I struggled to crawl out. Just as I felt the weight on my legs loosen, an out-of-control car came

hurtling towards me.

I saw Lucas’s pupils dilate as he lunged towards me without hesitation.

“Olivia!”

I felt a violent impact, then my whole world spun.

Blood gushed from my mouth.

I heard our daughter’s voice in my ear:

“Mommy, will Daddy be here today?”

No more waiting. We’ll never wait again.

I reached out to her, but she was so far away.

“Olivia Sanders, don’t fall asleep. Did you hear me? Mia is waiting for us at home.”

“I shouldn’t have hidden the child to teach you a lesson. I was wrong.”

“Don’t sleep. I’m begging you. I forgive you. Let’s not fight anymore, okay?”

His belated apology didn’t make me happy. If anything, I found him annoying.

He shouted loudly in my ear, drowning out Mia’s voice.

But my little Mia came to my side, blinking her innocent big eyes and reaching out her small hand to wipe my tears.

“Mommy, I’ve been good. I didn’t cry.”

Tears slid from the corners of my eyes.

“She’s crying. She’s still conscious. Hurry and save her!”

A blinding white light flashed, and I opened my eyes.

Lucas was holding my hand, his eyes red.

“Olivia Sanders, I regret it. I shouldn’t have tormented you.”

“Seeing you like this hurts my heart even more.”

“From now on, we’ll live happily together as a family. We’ll never be apart again.”
