Since there were only four of them dining, they sat at an
ordinary small table.
As a result, Nyasia’s lég easily brushed against Edmund’s.
Edmund glanced up at her, but quickly looked away, then ladled a bowl of soup and placed it in front of Kaneeta.
His expression remained unchanged, as if the little movements
under the table didn’t exist at all.
Nyasia became even bolder, lifting her foot to gently rub against
his leg.
Edmund still appeared perfectly composed, not even glancing at
her, and gently asked Kaneeta, “Why aren’t you having some
soup? I remember you used to like it.”
Kaneeta glanced at the bowl of soup but said nothing.
She did quite like the soup Lila made, but since it was Edmund
who served it to her, it only made her lose her appetite.
One important reason she planned to break up with Edmund
today was that she had overestimated her own tolerance.

She could no longer stand Edmund’s hypocrisy, nor could she
bear any physical contact with him; even his mere proximity made her feel repulsed.
When it came to pretending, she truly couldn’t compare to
Edmund.
Nyasia continued to rub Edmund’s leg under the table. Sitting at the same table with her mother and Kaneeta made it all the more
thrilling for her, and she even began to secretly exchange flirtatious glances with Edmund.
“Ahem!” Lila suddenly coughed heavily twice.
Startled, Nyasia instinctively withdrew her leg.
“Mrs. Kuntz, are you alright?” Kaneeta asked with concern.
“It’s nothing, just an old problem,” Lila smiled. “Come on, eat up.”
It seemed like just a minor interlude, but beneath the surface, the
dinner table was rife with undercurrents.
After the meal, Lila chatted with Kaneeta for a while. Her words
were full of concern, but she also brought up the topic of Kaneeta
and Edmund having a child soon.
“Since you’ve already registered your marriage, it’s better to have
a child while you’re still young. When the time comes, I’ll take
care of the baby at the old house, so you two won’t have to
worry.”
Kaneeta hesitated, planning to give Lila á heads–up that she and
Edmund were going to separate.
“Mrs. Kuntz, actually, Edmund and I…”
“Mom, why aren’t you resting yet?” Edmund walked over,
interrupting Kaneeta. “It’s getting late, you should go to bed.
Neeta is tired too.”
“You’re right, it’s late. Neeta, get some rest early.”
Edmund’s arrival made Kaneeta feel uncomfortable all over. She
said nothing more and returned to her own room.
She had already made up her mind: she wouldn’t be coming back
to stay after tonight.
No matter how much she liked Lila, she couldn’t stay by
Edmund’s side just for her.
As for the breakup, she would explain it to Lila gradually.
Not long after, her phone suddenly vibrated,
Kaneeta picked up her phone. Seeing the caller ID, her eyelashes
trembled slightly.
She swiped the screen and answered.
“Dad.”
“Hmph.” On the other end was the stern voice of a middle–aged
man. “So you still acknowledge me as your father.”
“Dad… I’ve never said I didn’t,” Kaneeta replied awkwardly.
Back then, when her father found out she was with Edmund, he
strongly objected.
Her father said Edmund was not a good man and not someone
she should entrust her life to.
But she refused to listen, insisting on being with Edmund. After graduating from university, she didn’t return to Roseburn, but
chose to stay in Calchester, by Edmund’s side.
Her father was furious with her and hadn’t spoken to her for
years. No matter how many calls or messages she sent, he
ignored them. She tried to change his opinion of Edmund, but it
was all in vain.
However, every time she video–called her grandmother, she
could hear her father’s cough in the background.
She knew her father still cared about her; he was just too angry.
Now, she finally understood her father’s words from back then,
and guilt overwhelmed her.
“You… never mind.” Although Matthew Drayton was still upset,
he didn’t want to be harsh with his daughter. “What made you
change your mind and decide to come home?”
Two months ago, during a video call with her grandmother, her
grandmother mentioned that her father had found her a
marriage prospect.
Her grandmother said her father wasn’t trying to use her, he just
didn’t want to see her waste her youth on Edmund. The marriage
prospect her father found was absolutely reliable.
But she adamantly refused.

argued.

willing to come home to help with the family business and also

“What is it?” Matthew suddenly became serious. “Did something
happen to you? I knew it, Edmund Kuntz is no good!”
Kaneeta quickly coughed twice to clear the lump in her throat.
Dad, but he and I really aren’t right for each other. I’ve
figured it out.”
She still hadn’t figured out how to tell her family about
everything that had happened. It was hard to talk about, and she
was afraid they’d worry or get angry.
“Ah! As long as you’ve figured it out, that’s good,” Matthew sighed
deeply. “Come home soon. These past years, managing such a big
company alone has really worn me out.””
“Okay… I’ll come back on the fifteenth of next month.”
Thinking about the arranged marriage waiting for her at home,
Kaneeta couldn’t help but ask, “Dad, who is my marriage
