Unsurprisingly the clase was empty when i stepped through the doorway. Cool vanilla sunlight poured in at the early fall son began to slowly sink in the sky blotted with grey clouds. For a moment everything seemed normal with nothing out of place.
That was until I spotted the folded note on the desk I usually sat at.
Frowning, I wondered if it was another practical joke or a note from a teacher. I thought about ignoring it and putting it in the bin or my bag but my body worked against me and picked up the note, unfolding it carefully.
Look behind you.
“What?” I gasped in confusion.
The classroom door slamming shut made me jump and I spun around only to feel the colour in my face drain away when i saw who was standing in front of the door, blocking my escape.
“Hello, Ellie. Noah Winters broke the silence, black eyes pinning me to the spot. “Have you missed me?”
“What are you doing here?” My voice held strength filling me with pride inwardly despite feeling sick with fear.
Just picking up my class schedule and checking on my favourite classmate.” Noah smirked, his eyes remaining cold and calculating
“But…I heard…”
“That I’d been arrested?” Black eyebrows raised in mock expectation. “Turns out it wasn’t me. At least that’s what the police think.”
I stood dumbfounded, frozen to the spot as I watched Noah push away from the door so casually it would be hard to believe that his intentions were anything but friendly. I knew better and yet I couldn’t make myself move as he approached slowly like a cat stalking a baby bird. Little had changed about Noah. He was still tall with an athletic build and his eyes and hair were the same shade of black. He had always been well put together and now was no exception with his hair perfectly styled and not a hint of stubble on his light bronze skin.
“Did you like my gifts?” He finally asked when he was practically standing toe–to–toe with me, eyes flashing wickedly like a knife. “I know you got them because I saw you.”
I couldn’t speak. Words froze up in my throat in fear as I tried to lean away from him. He saw the movement, the corners of his lips twitching as if he was trying to hide a smile of satisfaction.
“Shall I let you in on a little secret? His voice was low and intimate, almost breathy. “You are prettier when you’re scared.”
My silence seemed to amuse No, his head tilting slightly as he studied me like a specimen under a microscope. I flinched as he tucked some of behind my ear.
“I saw your new friend.” He finally spoke again, his voice dangerously calm. “Get rid of him.”
“Noah, please…” I begged.

Pain exploded in my stomach, winding me and sending me doubling over. My muscles and ribs smarted in pain from the swift impact of Noah’s first into my stomach. I gasped in pain, my stomach threatening to empty its contents onto the floor violently. Before I could react, his hand was around my throat, righting me so my face was level with his.
“Shh–shh–shh,” he cooed. “It was a tap, Ellie, nothing more. Think of it as a reminder of who is in charge here. Who is in charge, Ellie?”
“You.” I whispered.
“Mhm, Noah lifted his thumb to wipe away a hear from my cheek. “Get rid of him or I will.”
I watched as he pulled away and brought his thumb to his mouth, swiping away my tears as if it was a prize.
I’ll be seeing you soon, Ellie.” Noah smirked, turning back to the door and leaving.
