This chapter didnt go quite to plan but I enjoyed writing it so I hope you enjoy reading it.
*Ready?” I asked Kole as 1 grabbed my bag.
“Vesh” Kyle replied refortantly, his eyes watching me as I pulled on my coat only to step forward and hold the garment for me when I struggled. “Are you tore about going back today? Maybe a few more days of rest would be best.”
“Don’t bother, Kyle.” Alden spoke from behind us, leaning against the door frame to the living room. “I’ve tried that
already and the won’t budge.”
It had been nearly a week since the party and while I was still sore as hell, I couldn’t spend another day at home doing nothing under Aiden’s critical gaze. Even the joy of playing video games had worn thin.I was still waiting for my new phone to be delivered as well which meant I couldn’t text anyone or just play around on that.
When Aiden had to go out, Kyle stuck around as if I needed a babysitter. I wasn’t allowed to even get myself a drink and the look of sheer panic in Kyle’s eyes (while comical) was alarming any time I accidentally knocked one of my many injuries. Once I jokingly commented that Aiden must have threatened Kyle with death if I was hurt under his care. The soft nervous chuckle that left Kyle as he shifted awkwardly suggested I hadn’t actually been far off the mark.
“I’m right here.” I piped up. “And I’m fine. I can’t spend another day doing nothing.”
Aiden loosened a breath of frustration, blue eyes burning into me. “I’d be happier if you waited until Monday before trying to go to school.”
“It’s not like you need to go anyway!” Kyle added.
“I’m going!” I argued and zipped my coat up roughly/“You two can stay here if you’d like but I’ll see you after school.”
Aiden’s expression didn’t change even though I could see the reluctance in his eyes. Kyle slumped his shoulder and nodded, gesturing to me to lead the way.
I sighed in relief when I stepped outside. I wasn’t even bothered that it was horrible outside. The fresh air filled my lungs which sucked it in gratefully. It had only been a few days but it felt like the world had changed so much. The weather had turned much cooler as winter continued to creep in. A fine rain had started overnight which dampened everything but only to the point that the ground felt like there was a layer of grease on it. Fat beads of water trembled as they clung hopelessly to the tips of naked branches of the eaves of buildings. Everything was undeniably grey and damp.
I didn’t mind the silence as we walked. Kyle did most of the talking on our journeys anyway but this morning even he seemed to be out of conversation or was too deep in thought to say anything. My relief of being out of the house soon simmered to nothing as the school came into view and I could see other students milling around. It dawned on me now, as we got closer to the school, that I perhaps hadn’t thought this through properly. What if people had found out what happened over the weekend? I didn’t think I could handle being the subject of school gossip especially about something so horrible as this.
“Are you okay?” Kyle’s voice broke through my sudden bubble of worry, his brows pinching into a concerned frown.
