Chapter 42
I read over the rest of the document for an amendment but found none. However I did find the contact details for the law firm who had been in charge of looking after the will. It was too late to call them but I made a decision to call them in the morning to try and get answers, hoping that some solicitor in Florida could clear up this matter. There was just no way that my grandmother who I had never seen would leave that much money.
The painkillers helped me get some sleep despite my racing thoughts. That night my dreams were plagued by everything troubling me. Noah, Aiden, School, Julia, Liam, the money…
By morning I had a headache which was threatening to turn into a migraine with every slight movement and my whole body ached. My limbs felt heavy and the general feeling of being tired and unwell settled into my bones as I forced myself to get ready for school while hold music blasted from my phone while I waited for someone from the law firm to answer.
“Morning princess.” Kyle chirped as he let himself in, tilting his head at the sound of the terrible music. “Uh… didn’t peg you as a classical music kind of girl.”
“I’m on hold.” I huffed, resting my head in my hands with elbows planted on the kitchen table. “I’m trying to get through to this law firm in Florida.”
“Any particular reason why?” Kyle sat opposite me clearly finding the whole scenario bizarre.
I sighed tiredly and pushed the will in front of him, letting him read the same words I had a dozen times last night and probably a dozen more times this morning. I said nothing as Kyle’s brown eyes scanned over the document before they widened, his eyebrows shooting up in surprise before he looked at me.
“Five hundred thousand dollars?” He choked.
“Yeah.” I muttered. “It has to be a mistake. I never met this grandmother that I can remember so I’m on the phone to some law firm who aren’t picking up.”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa!” Kyle grabbed my phone and ended the call.
“Hey!” I yelped, regretting it immediately when my head throbbed.
“You’re calling the lawyers to tell them there has been some mistake and you don’t want the money.” Kyle asked, completely ignoring my protests. “Are you crazy?”
“No!” I grumbled, attempting to snatch my phone back from him. Kyle was quicker and held the phone out of reach, making me groan in frustration. “Kyle! Give it back!”
“Not until I’m sure you’re not going to do something stupid. Kyle replied calmly. So, has this got something to do with your mom coming over the other night.”
“I don’t know, I think so.” I sighed tiredly and closed my eyes against the flashing auras that were swimming in something she’d stick her nose in.”
“Hm. Kyle was looking at the letter again. “I mean it would make sense.
“Really?” I asked, opening my eyes to give him a questioning look. “What makes you say that?”

frowned and looked down at the will again, flipping through it quickly. Sure enough, an amendment was made about five years ago removing Julia as beneficiary from the will. She was initially down to receive the deed to some commercial units in Florida as well as a lump sum of money. Now she was receiving nothing.

So that’s why she is around. She didn’t get her cut and now she wants to try and get it from us?
My stomach turned at the thought. I knew Julia was a selfish person and greedy to a fault but did she really think so little of Liam and me that she had to have a monetary reason to visit? Was she lying last night about wanting to be around more? I felt sick at the fact I wasn’t even surprised by the thought. However, I felt more nauseated at remembering the small part of me that had desperately wanted to believe Julia was being honest.
“Hey El? You don’t look so good. Are you okay?”
I looked up at Kyle realising I had been sat with my eyes closed and probably looking like an idiot.
“Yeah I’m fine.” I muttered, pushing my chair back. “Let’s just get to school.”
I stood with the intentions of getting my bag and heading to school but my throbbing head and churning stomach had other ideas as a wave of dizziness hit me. I caught the table to steady myself, feeling like I had just jumped off a Merry–go–round onto the deck of a ship in rough seas.

“Because I’m going to be sick.” I replied quickly before rushing to the downstairs toilet in time to empty the contents of my stomach into the bowl.
