Chapter 31
It was getting on for 11pm when it was time to try and speak with Liam. It was always difficult to try and get hold oft other when we were on different sides of the planet but it wouldn’t be my birthday if I didn’t at least get to speak to tim for five minutes.
In truth it felt like a lifetime ago that I last spoke to him even if in reality it had only been a couple of weeks. So much had happened in that short space of time and yet I couldn’t tell Liam a single thing about it. Lord only knows how he would react if he found out I had been assaulted by a guy at school, drank alcohol and kissed his best friend. He might
send me to live in a convent or something.
The screen lit up after only a few seconds and Liam’s face beamed at me in all its pixelated glory.
“Tater tots!” He cheered, grinning like a cheshire cat. “Happy Birthday!”
“Thanks, Liam.” I mumbled, my cheeks heating up in a blush when I realised that he wasn’t alone. “I’ve missed you.”
“I’ve missed you too.” My brother’s smile softened. “What have you been up to this weekend?”
I instantly remembered the two very heated make out sessions Aiden and I had shared. My lips still felt tender and swollen from how ferociously Aiden had kissed me. My cheeks warmed again and I was grateful that the camera quality on the laptop was not all that good. I was grateful that Aiden wasn’t back yet. I am pretty sure I would have been reduced to a puddle of stammers and red cheeks if I knew he was around the house somewhere.
“Not much really. Tammy took me to see Aiden’s new bar.” I answered vaguely. “And Kyle and I watched movies and had pizza.”
“Look at you being a social butterfly.” Liam teased. “We’ll have to do something when I get back.”
“Get back?” I frowned in confusion.
“Yeah.” Liam sighed with a smile. “That’s what I wanted to talk to you about. I’ve decided to leave the forces and I’m going to be coming home in about two months.”
“Really?” I perked up, feeling excitement tingling at the back of my eyes and nose.
“Yeah. I’ll be home in time for Christmas.”
I stared at the image of my brother, frozen in disbelief. How long had it been since Liam had been home? It was at least a year and even then he had only been back for two weeks. It had been an amazing two weeks of course. We went to the zoo watched movies, ate junk food and just had fun. I had been heartbroken when he had to go back and since then, we’ve been talking for no more than fifteen minutes every two weeks. He was thousands of miles away putting himself in danger and I was here, alone and always quietly worrying that he might never come back or he would but in a coffin. So to hear he was quitting the military and coming home for good made my heart swell and tears fill my eyes until everything blurred.
“Hey Tater tots, are you still there?” Liam’s voice broke through my shock.
“Yeah!” I stumbled still speechless. I’m just so surprised! I thought you liked your job though.”
“I do but I miss being home. You’re going to college soon and I want to spend as much time as possible with you before
“Liam explained. “Also Aiden made an offer to work with him I couldn’t refuse.”

What? At the bar?” I frowned. Bartending was probably fun but it wasn’t a money maker.
Ha! No way!” Liam laughed. “Construction. Look, I’ll explain everything when I get back but for now, count those days down. I’ll be back before you know it.”

i The rest of our conversation went by quickly before Liam had to go back to work. By the end I was on cloud nine, excitement and relief buzzing inside of me like a strong shot of caffeine. There was no way I could sleep and was grateful had no school the next day because I was sure I wasn’t going to sleep. Putting my laptop away, I headed to the kitchen to get a drink, tapping a message to Kyle on my phone.
Me: Hey guess what?!
Me: Liam is coming home!
