Chapter 28

The kiss was far more heated and hungry than our first, tongues wrestling as I felt myself being backed against the railing. Aiden crowding my space until he was all I could feel and see and taste. Nothing around us mattered or existed as we kissed except the kiss itself. My fingers carded through the golden wheat strands of Aiden’s hair, marvelling how they slipped against my skin like silk. My need to touch him was insatiable and the way Aiden’s fingers skimmed over my feverish skin like feathers sending goosebumps over me in their wake

By the time we parted because our lungs were screaming for air, I was utterly hooked. I didn’t want to stop even though I knew we couldn’t stay here for much longer without it potentially raising suspicions. But even as Aiden’s forehead rested against mine and we both panted softly, I craved more

I better go in before someone comes looking for me

”

murmured sounding as reluctant to move as I felt

I know.I breathed, unable to move and create space

Aiden didn’t say anything else, he didn’t need to. He pulled aw

one more chaste kiss before leaving me alone in the

I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay after that. My guilt was trying to eat me alive while longing made my heart ache. It was just a kiss and yet I felt like I was addicted. Luckily everyone was too busy to notice me slip back into the bar and collect my things. I was in no mood to say goodbye to anyone and was silently grateful when I managed to avoid everyone, knowing knew Tammy or Kyle would try and get me to stay

I woke the next morning, safe and sound in my bed. For a moment, the events of the previous night seemed like nothing more than a dream, everything blurring into a mess of colour and sounds except for Aiden kissing me. That was so clear that for a moment I thought I had dreamt it. It seemed like a fantasy I had conjured or something that happened to

someone else

Forcing myself from my bed and tidying myself up with a shower and clean clothes, I headed downstairs expecting to see the place empty. I didn’t even recall hearing anyone coming home last night but I had been too tired to wait up. A pang of sadness hit me like a punch to the gut as I imagined Aiden going home with Tammy and pretending as if nothing happened between us. Maybe it was for the best, Aiden was way out of my league. While I was now eighteen, I was still Liam’s kid sister and that would be a mantle I will likely carry forever when it came to Aiden. So I was surprised to find Kyle sprawled out on the couch watching cartoons and Aiden sitting on the step to the backyard smoking. Neither of them

corpse on some cop show, noticed me. Aiden had his back to me and Kyle looked like he was auditioning for the part of eyes surrounded by dark shadows and hair looking like he was dragged through a bush backwards. Even his skin had a pasty complexion hinting that he was suffering a bit

Hey.I spoke up as I stood in the doorway of the living room, shifting nervously

as two pairs of

yes landed on me

Oh hey birthday girl,Kyle smiled tiredly, his head tilted back to look at me so he didn’t have to move his body an inch. Where did you disappear to last night?”

Oh you knowI shrugged, biting on my lower lip to steady myself against the shyness that was trying to take over. I was exhausted so I came home.”

I tried to keep my focus on Kyle who was now looking at the TV again. However, my eyes couldn’t resist stealing a subtle glance at Aiden only to find him watching me, deep aqua blue eyes squinting against the pale morning light. Just the sight of his messy flaxen locks and stubbledusted sharp jaw had my lungs dragging in a shaky breath and my cheeks warming

Coffee?I inwardly cringed at how high my voice came out

Chapter 28

Sure.Kyle replied

Aiden? My voice all but gave up on me at this point

He didn’t reply immediately but rather took his time while he dragged on his cigarette and let the smoke escape his lungs in a stream of blueish grey clouds. His eyes never left me, the light making them glow as he studied me, giving away nothing about what he was thinking or feeling. I wanted to look away but I couldn’t. It was as if he had hypnotised me. His predatory gaze had found its prey and I suddenly wondered if this was how a rabbit felt right before the wolf pounced

Yeah.He finally spoke, voice even but there was something dark yet playful mixed into the deep richness of his voice. Coffee sounds good.”
