Chapter 17
Usually at lunch I sat alone in the library or didn’t bother at all and just went to my first class. Kyle, ever the social butterfly, insisted I stick with him for lunch. He was quickly making friends even though it was still at that acquaintance stage where they say each other’s names as a greeting and either wave of give each other some weird handshake that perhaps they got off of the latest sports star or musician. Despite his growing popularity, he insisted on sitting
outside on the bleachers with me.
“But it’s freezing out there!” I grumbled as he tugged me along.
“Yeah but it’s the only chance we get for fresh air! We’re stuck indoors all day otherwise!” Kyle explained before plonking himself down on a bench.
After lunch it was a little different. Unlike me, Kyle didn’t have all his credits yet so he had classes to complete whereas I had a free period. Agreeing to meet Kyle in the cat park to walk home together, we went our separate ways, him to whatever class he had and me to the library to get some of my
homework done.
The halls cleared quickly despite it being Monday afternoon leaving me to walk in silence, the echo of my footsteps my only company. A few other students also had free–period but most decided to either leave the school grounds (despite it being against the rules) or to hang out by the sports field. Only a handful like me actually used their free time like they were meant to and studied. The library was pretty empty save for the librarian and a couple of other students taking some of the desks towards the front of the room.
The library was spread over one floor and a mezzanine. Most students liked to study on the mezzanine because they weren’t as monitored up there and could get away with goofing around more easily. The varnished double doors opened up to the central area with the librarian’s station on the opposite wall. To the left were a small handful of desks and beyond that, six tall and very long bookcases often shuddering under the number of books crammed into them. To the right, behind a small partition were the computers with access to wi–fi but no access to any of the social media sites. Nonetheless, they were all occupied.
Pale vanilla light poured in from windows all around. It was as if the architect couldn’t decide what type of windows they wanted so just put them all in from letterbox sized ones above the librarian’s station as at the back behind the bookcases to the wall to ceiling ones adjacent to the front desks and on the
mezzanine.
I quietly walked through the library, invisible to those who were studying or killing time. I might as well have been a ghost because not one person looked up as 1 floated by, walking between two of the bookcases towards a couple of desks hidden at the back. Few students came this way. Someone started a rumor a few years back that it was haunted and since then, everyone kept their distance. Apparently it’s amusing when Zac Bagans is touched by a ghost but
not when it’s you.

Dumping my bag on the ground, I pulled my phone out and plugged my earphones in to listen to music while I tried to get my maths homework done. It was my least favourite subject but I had learnt that getting it out of the way was better than sitting on it. I also found it easier to do it when we had just
been given it and the class was still fresh in my mind.
I’m not sure how long passed like this; my spotify playlist flicking through my favourites as I poured my attention into the problems and equations until my head felt like it was full of cotton wool. Feeling the muscles in my back begin to ache from being hunched over the desk, I leaned back in my seat, feeling
my spine poop a little but the pain in my muscles still throbbing away making me shift uncomfortably.
Just as I went to stand, I felt large hands come to rest on my shoulders, thumbs pressing into those painful trapezius muscles and moving in circular
movements. I froze, my breath hitching in my throat until I assumed it was Kyle.
Kyle you scared the shit out of me.” I breathed as I removed my earphones and let myself relax into the backrub. “Did class finish already?”
“Hm, I think Kyle’s class won’t finish for another ten minutes.” A voice all too familiar answered me in amusement.
1 froze.
“Just me and you now.” Noah whispered against my ear, hot breath fanning my skin but a cold lump forming in the pit of my stomach. I instantly tried to stand but Noah was quicker pushing against my shoulders so I remained in my seat. “Ah–ah. You’re not trying to run away from me, are you Ellie? Here I am trying to do something nice for you and you’re being incredibly ungrateful.”
I whimpered when Noah pressed his fingers into my skin with painful force.
“Now your bodyguard is not here, I thought we could have a little chat.” He continued, not caring that he was hurting me. ‘It seems my words from Friday didn’t register with you. Almost like you willingly disobeyed me.”
“No, I didn’t, I swe

“Hush now. Noah caught me off, his voice calm, playful but so dark and sinister and I felt my blood rum Bald. It doesn’t matter Your little friend will be dealt with soon enough. For now I want to focus on you and 1.
He let out a breath almost like he was trying to calm himself but I knew better. It was all part of his little act. He liked to play with me and mork rae before he went in for the kill.
“There is no use in trying to hide me from me, Ellie.” Spoke softly, thumbs moving once again to massage my back but I was rigid in terror. ‘I know everything about you and where you go. I know what you do and when you do it. So you can try and avoid me all you want but I’m always watching.
Please just leave me alone.” I whispered as I fought against the tears filling my eyes.
“I can’t do that.” Noah replied. “You see, I promised to destroy you and I’m going to do just that. I am going to tear you down bit by bit until there is
nothing left of you Ellie and do you know why?
I shook my head. Noah’s hands slipped closer to my throat, pressure building against my windpipe instantly making me jerk and claw at his hands to try and pry them away.
“You belong to me, little Ellie. Every breath, every tear, every cry is mine. I

This is when you change up your routine, or better yet, don’t have one. Stick to densely populated areas where there are lots of witnesses. Change up your schedule. Skip so…
