Chapter 31
Camilla had a feeling Nina wasn’t talking about the affair. Even if Nina was stupid, she wouldn’t defend a mistress so openly.
Nina rolled her eyes and said in a mocking tone, “Oh, Mrs. Hawthorne, how quickly you forget. Back then, you-”
“Nina, enough,” Ophelia cut her off. She squeezed Nina’s hand gently. ““Don’t forget. You have an important client meeting soon. Go put some ice on your face.”
That client was a rich second–generation heir Nina had been chasing for a while. She touched her face and quickly walked off in her heels.
Camilla narrowed her eyes, her mind clear.
Ophelia had done that on purpose. She didn’t want Nina to finish her
sentence.
Ophelia turned to Camilla. “Mrs. Hawthorne, please don’t take Nina’s words seriously. She’s always been blunt and speaks without thinking.”
Camilla had no interest in whatever lies Ophelia had fed Nina. She turned and walked into her office, using her cane to locate the door. She pushed it open, and it swung back from the momentum.
“Camilla, wait.” Ophelia suddenly rushed forward and reached for the doorframe–just in time for the door to slam on her hand.
“Ah,” Ophelia cried out in pain.
Camilla turned back, confused, and saw a bright red mark on Ophelia’s
delicate hand.

The next second, Charles’s angry voice rang out. “Camilla, what do you think you’re doing?”
Through her sunglasses, Camilla saw Charles striding toward them. His brows were furrowed, his eyes full of concern for Ophelia–and blame for
her.
Because Camilla was blind, Charles didn’t bother hiding his expression.
“Mr. Hawthorne, it’s not Mrs. Hawthorne’s fault.” Ophelia quickly grabbed his arm. “I was careless and got hit by the door.”
David had seen everything clearly and couldn’t help but speak up. “Mr. Hawthorne, it really was just an accident.”
Charles, who always cared about appearances, pressed his lips together and said nothing more. But he reached out to Ophelia. “Let me see.”
Ophelia, who was turning her hand behind her back, hesitated for a moment, then slowly placed her hand in his.
“It doesn’t hurt, Mr. Hawthorne,” she said softly.
Charles frowned. “If it had been any harder, your bones might’ve broken.”
He didn’t name names, but Camilla knew he was blaming her.
Camilla thought she wouldn’t feel anything. But after loving Charles for so many years, his every word and expression still hurt her deeply.
“It’s okay, Mr. Hawthorne. I’ll just put some medicine on it,” Ophelia said gently. “I don’t blame Mrs. Hawthorne. She just found out about my promotion to R&D manager last week. It’s understandable she’s upset.”
Charles’s face darkened even more.
“So that’s what this is about. I was going to talk to you about it tonight.

This was a decision made by the board. It has nothing to do with Ophelia. Camilla, you’re being irrational,” he said.
His words made it clear–he thought she was bullying Ophelia.
Camilla suddenly felt exhausted. She had wasted over a decade of her life. on a jerk.
She forced herself to keep up the act. “Fine. Let’s talk at home tonight.”
But Charles wasn’t ready to let it go. “Camilla, I think you should apologize to Ophelia.” He frowned, standing up for Ophelia.
Camilla stared at him through her sunglasses.
He stood beside Ophelia, his handsome face now filled with blame.
Camilla felt dazed.
All those years Camilla loved him, she had been looked down on by hist friends, mistreated by his family–and never once had he stood by her side.
like this.
Every time, Charles said, “Camilla, be reasonable.”
“Camilla, they’re my friends. Show some respect.
“Camilla, my family just cares about me. They don’t mean any harm.”
“Camilla, try to understand. Bear with it for me, okay?”
Camilla had endured everything, swallowed all the pain, just to avoid making things hard for him.
But Charles never once tried to understand or comfort her.
