Chapter 95 “Just a Small Matter?”
“So, Mom,” Melody said weakly, clinging to her mother’s hand, her face pale as paper, “let’s just leave it at that. I won’t pursue it any further.”
She looked like a single breath of wind might knock her over. And yet, even in that state, she had made the effort to come out and “plead” on Ginny’s behalf.
That gesture–false as it was–only deepened Chadler’s mother’s displeasure with Ginny.
She stepped forward, gently supporting Melody. “Melody dear, you’re so weak already. Why did you come out here? Go back and rest. We’re here—you don’t have to worry. No one will bully
you.”
Pleased to have drawn sympathy, Melody kept playing the part of the considerate one.
“I wronged Ginny. I should be the one apologizing. As for the pain I’m going through now… Ginny has been through it before, hasn’t she? If I insist on holding her accountable, I’m only forcing her to relive her own loss.
“Things are already bad enough. All I want now is to be with Chandler. As for the rest… let’s just let it go.”
It was far from kindness. Every word was calculated–salt

rubbed straight into Ginny’s old wounds.
Ryan caught the underlying malice immediately. He stepped forward to speak, but Ginny stopped him with a quiet motion of her hand.
He had done more than enough today. The rest—she could handle herself.
“I’m not you,” Ginny said, calm and clear. “I’m Chandler’s legal wife. As for how I lost my child, Chandler knows the whole truth.
“And you? Were you ever actually pregnant? Melody, if you want me to stop doubting you, then let a certified OB–GYN examine you. After all, it’s not hard to tell whether someone has had a miscarriage or not.”
Her tone was sharp, even brutal.
The color drained from Melody’s face. Even Chandler frowned at Ginny’s words.
Earlier, when Melody brought up Ginny’s miscarriage, he’d felt some concern for how it might affect her. But now? He felt Ginny had crossed a line. Too cruel. Too harsh.
No wonder Melody was forced to speak up..
“You… how can you say that to me?” Melody choked. “I knew

Chandler before you ever came along. If I hadn’t gone abroad, the one marrying him would’ve been me…”
Ginny’s reply was cold, “That’s a hypothetical. I’m speaking facts.
“People recognize the truth, not what–ifs. The law does, too. So whether you like it or not, I’m still Chandler’s legal wife. And you? You’re the woman who tried to break up someone else’s marriage.”
“That’s enough.” Chandler’s voice cut through the air as Melody’s face turned ashen.
“She’s not wrong,” he said, tone clipped. “Our marriage happened because Grandpa wanted it, not because I loved you or wanted to marry you. If I’d known what kind of person you really were, I never would’ve married you.”
What kind of person she really was? She had been set up, cornered, stripped of dignity–and all she did was defend herself. That made her evil?
What about Melody? Pretending to be pregnant, framing her. Why didn’t he call that cruel?
Of course. Because he cared about Melody.
Because if Melody said something, it had to be right—even when he knew it wasn’t.

But if Ginny said the truth, he’d refuse to believe a single word.
Truth cuts deep. And today, it had sliced her open again and again.
Enough. She was done.
“If you really believe her, Chandler,” Ryan said, “then how about calling Captain Decker from forensics to do a trace analysis
at the Pierce estate? He specializes in forensic imprints. If the physical evidence is intact, he can reconstruct what happened.
“You’re in this field–you know better than I do what Captain Decker is capable of. So? Are you going to call him, or should I?”
Ryan couldn’t watch this anymore. He offered the idea like a lifeline.
Chandler knew exactly what Captain Ian Decker could do. The two of them were friends. If he made the call, the man would come without hesitation.
But then Chandler thought back to that odd look on Mrs. Wheeler’s face earlier–and slowly, he let his hand fall away.
Ginny caught the hesitation. Saw the retreat. And her heart sank.
“I agree to call the police.”

庭
“No,” Chandler interrupted immediately, shooting her a look of barely restrained frustration. “Do you even hear yourself?
“The Wheeler and Pierce families are both prominent in California. If this goes public, what will people say about us? This isn’t worth blowing up over something so small.”
Something so small?
She almost laughed.
Just moments ago, wasn’t he the one who tried to force her to give up her uterus because Melody’s might be damaged?
Back then, it was serious enough to demand her body. But now that she wanted justice, suddenly it was a small matter?
No. He knew it wasn’t right. He just didn’t want to stand up for
her.
And now, afraid of upsetting Melody, he was reaching for
another excuse.
So in the end, it wasn’t about truth at all.
It was just about Melody–and whatever she wanted him to do, he’d do it.
