Even now, after hearing his own son say those words–so casually, so coldly–as if asking Ginny to give up her womb for Melody was the most natural thing in the world, Chandler’s father found himself more and more lost.
He didn’t understand his son at all.
Who did he really love? Who didn’t he love?
Every time Chandler’s father thought he had it figured out, every time he assumed his son cared for one woman and not the other, Chandler would do something completely contradictory. As if just to prove him wrong.
And it wasn’t just him. Chandler’s mother didn’t understand their son either.
But unlike her husband, she looked further down the road.
These last few years, because of Ginny’s humble background, Chandler’s mother had endured all kinds of backhanded remarks during her afternoon teas with the other society wives.
If only her daughter–in–law had been someone like Melody–the beloved daughter of California’s wealthiest family–then none of those women would have dared to mock her.
The thought made her glance at Ginny with growing

displeasure.

“Ginny,” she said sharply. “How could you be so vicious? A woman’s uterus is her life. And you–you just destroyed hers like it was nothing. The Wheelers and Pierces have always been on good terms. Are you trying to turn us into enemies?”
She spoke as if taking no sides, but her stance was clear: she was with her son.
Ginny had never been close with Chandler’s mother. Truthfully, she’d never been close with any of them–except for Chandler’s grandparents.
So she had never expected help from Chandler’s parents.
“I already said it—I didn’t push her,” Ginny replied, voice steady. “If you don’t believe me, then call the police. But if you think you can force me to donate my uterus to Melody… forget it. You’ll have to kill me first.”
She turned to Chandler, eyes unwavering.
His brow furrowed at her refusal.
“Even children know actions have consequences,” he said. “You’re not even that reasonable?”
“That’s only true when someone’s actually done something wrong,” Ginny shot back, laughter laced with bitterness. “But I

haven’t. So why should I pay any price?

“Chandler, don’t act like you know me. We’ve been married five years. How many times have we actually met? Not many.
“All these years, it was me trying to get close to you. Me chasing scraps of your attention. Me trying to care for you. Did you ever once make the slightest effort for me?
“No. You just took everything I gave like it was owed to you. And now that the woman you like has reappeared, you won’t let me go either. But you know what? None of that matters anymore.
“I was the fool who fell for someone I never should’ve loved. These past few years were my punishment, and I accept that. But now? I owe you nothing. So you have no right to decide anything for me.”
She turned to leave.
Chandler tried to stop her, reaching out again, but this time Ginny was ready. She pulled away before he could grab her.
He missed, hand clutching only air. His face darkened.
“Ginny, do you have to be this way? You realize I’m still trying to negotiate with you. But once the Wheeler family comes for you, this won’t be a negotiation anymore.”
“What can they do to me?” At this point, Ginny had nothing left

She had one life. If they wanted it, they could take it. But if they thought they could use power or pressure to force her into submission, they were dreaming.
“I stayed all those years because I cared about you. But I don’t care anymore. And when I stop caring, you become just another stranger to me. And if you’re a stranger, why would I be afraid of your threats?”
Chandler reached for her again.
She shoved his hand away.
Chandler’s mother, watching from the side, immediately flared up. “Ginny, what are you doing?! Chandler is doing this for your own good! You’re just an orphan. Going against the Wheeler family–what good will that do you?
“And besides, today’s events? This was your fault from the start. Stop being so stubborn. Just admit it, and we can all move on.”
“You mean you can all move on,” Ginny interrupted, voice like ice. “Not me. I’ve said so much already–have any of you heard a single word I said?
“All you care about is how I’m going to make it up to Melody. But that logic only works if I actually did something wrong. But I didn’t. So why should I spend the rest of my life paying for her

lie? Stop telling me this is for my own good. Stop pretending to
care.
“Even if the Wheeler family kills me over this, I will never willingly give my uterus to that woman.”
Mrs. Wheeler scowled, lips pressed into a thin line. She hadn’t truly expected Ginny to agree–but the girl’s refusal was too forceful, too clean.
That stubborn, unyielding attitude grated on her.
Especially now, when Ginny still dared to claim Melody had set the whole thing up.
“You’ve seen the evidence,” Mrs. Wheeler snapped. “And yet you still talk like this? You really were raised without manners.”
Ginny froze.
She was an orphan. Chandler’s mother had already said it once. Mrs. Wheeler had heard it. She couldn’t not have heard it.
And now, she was using it as a weapon.
Of course.
No wonder she and Melody were so alike. They both knew exactly where to cut the deepest.

And this—this cut broke something in Ginny. For the first time today, her composure cracked.
