Chapter 91 Compensation: A Womb for Melody
Chandler’s face darkened further at Ginny’s words. “If you
were one of my subordinates,” he said, voice low, “I wouldn’t be asking. I’d be informing you.”
Ginny let out a short laugh, the kind that’s more tired than amused. “You call that asking? Chandler, I’ve really spoiled you.”
No matter what he said, Ginny refused to back down. She wouldn’t agree to give her womb to Melody.
Mrs. Wheeler had known from the beginning that uterine transplants were a possibility–but it had started as a lie, something she’d thrown out to add pressure. She hadn’t thought
too much about it at the time.
Besides, it wasn’t a simple procedure. At the very least, the donor and recipient had to share a blood type. Melody’s blood type was rare. Was Ginny a match? That would be far too
convenient.
“Spare me the drama,” Chandler said, stepping in closer. “Just tell me yes or no.”
He stood directly in front of her, posture tense and unmoving, as if he wouldn’t let her leave until she gave him the answer he
wanted.

The air between them was thick with tension, just on the verge of exploding, when Josh arrived with Chandler’s parents.
The moment he stepped into the hallway, the old man sensed something was wrong. Then he saw Chandler staring Ginny down and immediately rushed forward to shield her.
“What the hell are you doing?” he barked. “You don’t even know how to take care of your own wife, and now that she’s clearly upset, you’re standing there backing someone else? Chandler, what kind of a husband are you?”
“Grandpa,” Chandler said, trying to keep his voice even, “you’ve been misled. Melody really was pregnant. And now, because of her, Melody’s uterus has been removed. She’ll never be able to have children again.”
What?
Josh had just been working through how to approach negotiations with the Wheeler family, trying to minimize the damage from the chaos. Now this?
Even with this revelation, the old man never once doubted
Ginny.
Instead, he demanded Chandler bring over all the medical reports–every single one. He also wanted his own trusted physician to examine Melody. He’d only believe it if his people

confirmed Melody truly couldn’t have children.
Mrs. Wheeler’s face blanched. Of course she couldn’t allow that.
Her voice cracked as she launched into a plea. “Josh, this will destroy Melody. She barely handled losing the baby. Do you really think we could bear to tell her she’ll never have another?
“She cried all night. She won’t eat. She can’t sleep. She’s a wreck. If we tell her she’s lost everything, and she can’t take it–my husband and I might as well not go on either.”
Tears streamed down her face.
Josh had wanted to stand firm. But seeing her like that–seeing the drama play out like a scene carefully crafted for sympathy- he hesitated.
Just then, Chandler came over, gently taking his grandfather’s
arm.
“Grandpa, you’re not young anymore. It’s not good for your health to be running around the hospital.”
He turned to the butler. “Take him home. I’ll handle the rest.”
“And what does handling mean?” the old man snapped. “Bullying Ginny until she gives in? You think I don’t see it?”
He turned back to Ginny. “Tell me what he said to you just now.

Don’t be afraid. Say whatever you need to say. I’ll stand up for you.”
Ginny felt a lump rise in her throat. She wanted to cry, wanted to let it all pour out–but she wasn’t going to give Chandler that satisfaction. He’d already decided who was right and who was
wrong.
So she shook her head. “I’m fine, Grandpa. You shouldn’t keep coming here. You need to rest. I’ll check in on Melody… then I’m heading home.”
“Really?” he asked, uncertain. He didn’t quite believe her, but he also didn’t want to start another scene in the hospital–or let the Wheeler family enjoy the show.
Once he was sure she wasn’t going to break down on the spot, he reluctantly left with the butler.
Chandler, now that his grandfather was gone, wanted his parents to leave too. But his father stood his ground.
“This is a serious matter,” he said. “We can’t just leave. Chandler, Melody’s been through enough. You need to stay with her, and you also need to settle things with the Wheeler family.
“Whatever compensation they ask for, let me know. I’ll approve it. But don’t tell your grandfather. He’s too old for this.”
Chandler nodded slightly. “Dad, I was thinking… I want Ginny

to give her uterus to Melody.”
“What?” His father turned to him, stunned.

He’d always known Chandler wasn’t especially attached to Ginny–not full of love, not exactly indifferent, either. Their marriage had always been lukewarm. But he assumed they’d just coast through life like that.
He hadn’t counted on Melody reappearing.
People around town liked to gossip that his son had always been in love with Melody. But Chandler’s father knew what love looked like. He’d been young once too. He’d felt the thrill, the
butterflies.
And this? This wasn’t that.
His son didn’t love Melody. That much was clear.
So why, then, was he still so entangled with her?
Until recently, Chandler’s father had assumed his son was planning to marry Melody. As a parent, he’d stayed out of it— letting Chandler make his own decisions.
But then, just yesterday, outside the emergency room, Ginny had stood up in front of everyone and said the only reason she and Chandler weren’t divorced yet was because he didn’t want to
let go.

That moment had shaken him.
And now? Now he was starting to see his son more clearly.
Because no man demands that kind of sacrifice–from any woman–unless there’s still something buried deep down.
Even if he doesn’t recognize it himself.
