Chapter 73 The Mysterious Call
Lucky Draw
From her very first day at the lab, Ginny had stuck to one quiet principle: stay low, avoid conflict. She believed that if she simply did her part, stayed out of the fray, eventually people would see her for who she was.
She hadn’t expected that her restraint wouldn’t earn her respect, but instead, only encouraged them to push further.
If that was how it was going to be, then she wasn’t going to hold back anymore.
Professor Edward had once gone through his own stretch of being rejected and envied. He preferred a straightforward way of dealing with people, and had long ago turned down lucrative offers and hospital affiliations just to stay free of politics and
ambition.
Back then, before anyone knew his name, he had already decided he would never be bought or steered by money. He’d built his own lab from the ground up. Now that his name carried weight, he saw even less reason to keep any student around if it meant compromising what he valued.
So when Ginny finished speaking, his expression darkened.
“What she said–is it true?” His voice was cold and direct. “You were really bullying a labmate behind my back?”

His eyes scanned the students. Jessica and Lisa dropped their heads, visibly shaken. The rest–except for Ginny’s senior, Reese Taylor–looked equally flustered.
Professor Edward’s anger only deepened. “From day one, I made it clear: in this lab, there is no room for scheming or backstabbing. If you can’t abide by that, then you don’t belong here.
“I warned you, and you chose not to listen. So now, I won’t keep any of you. Go pack your things. You’re out of the lab.”
His decision landed like a bolt of lightning, sending Jessica and the others into a panic. Except for Reese and Wendy, everyone rushed to apologize.
They pleaded, promised it wouldn’t happen again. Some of them had been here for over a year. Getting kicked out now–it wasn’t just about the lab. It was about reputation. If word got out, no other lab would take them. /
If they’d known targeting Ginny would come with this kind of risk, they never would’ve done it.
But Professor Edward didn’t budge. No matter how sincere their apologies sounded, he remained unmoved. When he saw they were still hesitating to leave, he added with finality, “I’ll give you one hour. If you’re not gone by then, I’ll call security and have you escorted out.

That would be a public humiliation–one they couldn’t afford.
So when his words sank in, they got up, dragging their feet. None of them wanted to leave, but they had no choice.
After a long pause, Jessica spoke up again, this time almost pleading. “Professor… please. Can you not tell anyone what happened today?”
Professor Edward looked at her, disappointment in his eyes. But he understood how damaging rumors could be. And out of respect for the teacher–student bond they once shared, he gave a small nod.
One hour later, only three people remained in the lab.
Wendy sat stiffly at her station, her voice sharp and dripping with sarcasm. “You really are a curse, aren’t you? Wherever you go, trouble follows.”
“Wendy,” Reese cut in, voice tight. “What happened today wasn’t Ginny’s fault. You don’t need to taĺk like that.”
“Oh?” Wendy arched an eyebrow. “You siding with her now? Let me guess, you’re into her too? Reese, you probably don’t know, right? She’s married, And her husband’s mistress is trying to push her out.
“So if you really like her, you better wait until she’s officially divorced. Otherwise, I’d hate to see you become her next

casualty.”
Ginny said nothing.
She sat quietly, eyes on her data, not even flinching.
The lab had just been gutted because of her. Even if she hated Wendy, she wouldn’t go running to Professor Edward again. That wasn’t the point.
Things weren’t supposed to turn out–like this. She hadn’t meant for it to happen this way.
But she didn’t regret her choices, either.
She’d been swallowing things down for too long. If things exploded now, part of it was her responsibility–but the bigger part belonged to Jessica and the others.
As for Wendy’s bias… well, there were plenty of people outside this lab who had their own opinions about her. She wasn’t going to go around explaining herself to each one.
Even if she tried, who would believe her? So why waste her breath?
Still, she silently appreciated Reese’s willingness to speak up.

On the way back, she stopped by the local market and picked up some groceries. Once she got home, she rolled up her sleeves and got to work in the kitchen.
Tonight, she was in the mood for a hearty beef and root vegetable soup.
It was the best season for parsnips. She bought plenty.
As she chopped veggies, her phone buzzed on the counter.
She glanced at it—an unfamiliar number. Thinking it might just be another spam call, she put it back down and kept working.
Moments later, a text came through.
[If you don’t want things like today to keep happening, hurry up and get divorced.]
Ginny stared at the message, lips tightening.
The only people desperate for her to finalize the divorce were the Wheelers.
She figured the call and now this message–had to be from them.
With a muted sigh, she tossed her phone aside.
