Chapter 70 Chandler’s Suspicion
If it had been before, and Ginny had spoken to him with that same biting sarcasm, Chandler would’ve hung up on her without a second thought.
But this time, even with guilt gnawing at him, all he could feel was an ache he couldn’t quite place.
They’d been married for years, but now, for the first time, something like panic rose in his chest.
Ginny didn’t know what he was feeling. She didn’t want to.
With her lab training about to begin, the thought of the past repeating itself weighed on her.
“If you’re not too busy these next few days,” she said quietly, “then make time to finalize the divorce.”
His voice tightened. “You want out that badly?”
She let out a small, bitter laugh. “Does it even matter what I want? Melody’s pregnant. What, do you want your kid to be born illegitimate?
“Chandler, I never realized you were this irresponsible. You’ve already let me down–do you really want to do the same to someone else?

“I don’t like Melody, but once we’re divorced, none of that will have anything to do with me. Besides… do you really not know why all this is happening to me? If you still care–just a little- for the sake of what we had, then let me go. Sign the papers.”
Chandler’s grip on the phone tightened, his fingers pressing so hard he could hear the skin squeaking against the glass. The sound was unpleasant, yet he didn’t hang up.
Red–eyed, he stared blankly out the window, replaying her words over and over in his mind.
He could admit he hadn’t been there for her lately. But that was because she’d turned on Melody first. If she’d only treated Melody differently, maybe things wouldn’t have gotten this far.
Even now, he still thought it was her fault.
Ginny let out a quiet, disbelieving laugh. “Fine. Whatever you say.”
They were already divorcing. The details of who was right or wrong no longer mattered.
“What if I refuse?”
He caught the desperation and resolve in her voice. It unsettled him. So he hesitated. Then softened.
But Ginny’s face darkened at his shift. “Then I’ll send proof of

your affair to your department. You work for the government your position is sensitive. Whether the evidence is real or not. your superiors aren’t going to take it lightly.”
“I don’t want things to go that far,” she said flatly. “But if you insist on dragging this out, I won’t hesitate. I’m getting a divorce, no matter what.”
And with that, she hung up.
Chandler opened his mouth to speak, only to be met with the cold click of disconnection. His face darkened.
Proof? What proof?
He’d never cheated on her. Where had she even gotten such an
idea?
She’d known from the beginning he didn’t love her. Yet she’d still been happy to marry him.
And now she wanted out, just like that? So ruthless?
He thought about her threat. About the words she’d said just before hanging up.
An affair.
Had he really cheated?

For weeks, as people whispered and assumed the worst, he hadn’t defended himself. He believed the truth would clear
itself.
But now, Ginny was divorcing him over rumors, and he couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Had he really been that careless with Melody?
And her pregnancy…
That night.
The night he blacked out.
He’d been drinking heavily, couldn’t remember a thing. All he knew was that the next morning, when he woke up, Melody was beside him in bed.
Was that the night it happened? Was that how the child came to
be?
He tried to remember, but every time his mind circled back, it was just a blur–an empty space where memory should’ve been.
After turning it over a while, he finally picked up his phone and called Melody.
“That night? It’s been so long–how could I remember the details?” she said, caught off guard.

His question made her nervous. She tried to brush it off.

But Chandler wouldn’t let it go. “Just try to recall,” he insisted. “Think carefully.”
Flustered, Melody gave a weak, flirty laugh. “Chandler, what’s there to remember about that kind of night? If you really want to… I can come over later. But the doctor said, we should be careful, if we do anything, cause of the baby.”
He cut in quickly. “That’s not what I meant. I just… I need you to think back, seriously. That night–I heard someone say that men can’t… perform when they’re drunk. Completely drunk.
“I always thought nothing happened that night. But now… you’re pregnant.”
So he was suspicious.
Melody pressed her lips together. “My mom just got back. Let’s talk later.”
She hung up in a hurry.
Chandler wouldn’t bring this up for no reason. Someone must’ve planted the doubt.
And not just anyone. Someone he listened to.

Ginny.
It had to be her.

As the thought took root, Melody became more certain.
Yes–it was her. This was her revenge. Still bitter that the Wheeler family had blocked her job prospects, she was trying to
get even now.
Ginny, I thought you had more class than this. Turns out, you’re just as petty as anyone else.
