Chapter 56 Resignation
Lucky Draw
Ginny’s foot slipped off the gas, and her car lurched forward, slamming into the vehicle in front of her.
The moment she realized what had happened, she unbuckled her seatbelt and stepped out.
The driver of the other car had already exited, making their way to the back to assess the damage. Their expression was understandably sour–nobody’s thrilled about getting rear–ended.
But as soon as they got a good look at Ginny under the streetlight, the irritation on their face softened and lifted.
“I’m so sorry, I—”
“Dr. Jenkins? It’s really you!”
Ginny had started to apologize right away, but the other woman interrupted her with a bright smile and extended a hand.
“I’m Samantha Haven, Dean of Saints Hospital.”
Saints Hospital was the most renowned private hospital in the city. Ginny had heard of Ms. Haven, of course, but this was the first time they’d met in person.
She was young–probably in her thirties–with a calm and

understated, and her smile carried a kind of quiet assurance. It had a way of casing people’s nerves.
Even Ginny, tense as she’d been, felt her shoulders relax a little under that gaze.
“Ms. Haven, I’m truly sorry. I take full responsibility for the rear–end. Here’s my card. Once the repair cost is finalized, just give me a call–I’ll transfer the amount to you right away. I’m so sorry to hold you up.”
Judging from her attire, she must’ve just left the hospital after a full day of work. Anyone clocking out after a long shift would be full of fatigue and frustration.
Honestly, the fact that she wasn’t cursing her out was already a gift. Ginny knew she needed to show proper courtesy and accept this grace.
“You don’t need to be so formal,” Ms. Haven replied easily. “We all space out now and then.”
She handed Ginny a business card, but instead of talking about compensation, she brought up something else entirely.
“My assistant reached out to you a while ago about joining our hospital. The offer still stands. Same terms as before. I wanted to take this chance to personally invite you again. If you change your mind, just call this number anytime.”

Ms. Haven clearly picked up on her low spirits. She gave Ginny a gentle pat on the shoulder, smiling. “It’s late. Get home safe.”
After she drove off, Ginny looked down at the card in her hand, then turned and got back into her car.
Just as she was about to drive away, her phone buzzed.
A voice message.
She tapped it open. Wendy’s voice burst out, loud and seething with anger.
“Ginny, I thought after all these years you’d be different than you were back in college. But you’re still the same–you love watching men fight over you. Can you stop being so immature? This isn’t school anymore.
“For once, deal with your own mess. Don’t drag Professor Edward into it. And leave Ryan out of it too.
“Because of you, the professor’s being threatened. Ryan’s company is having funding issues. You’re a curse. No wonder even your parents abandoned you—”
A curse. No wonder even your parents abandoned you.
No wonder your parents abandoned you!.

Abandoned you!

The entire drive home, Ginny couldn’t shake Wendy’s voice. Those words kept echoing in her head.
Was it true?
Was there something so fundamentally wrong with her that anyone who tried to help her–anyone she cared about–would end up suffering because of it?
If that was the case… maybe she really was better off alone. Maybe it was better that way–being alone forever–than dragging people down with her.
“Ginny! Where’ve you been? I was getting worried.”
Kelly had waited up for her in the dorm. She hadn’t dared call, guessing Ginny might’ve needed space.
Now that she was back, Kelly rushed to help–taking her bag, her keys, offering her a pair of slippers. “I already heated water for your bath. Go relax.”
‘…Thanks.”
The hot water streamed over her head, down her back, splashing onto the floor in soft, steady beats.
Ginny stood there with her eyes closed, letting the water run

over her face. Her tears mixed with it, indistinguishable.

The warmth soaked her skin, wrapping around her chilled and numb body, her frozen heart.
So what if the innocent will be cleared eventually? It was just a saying people liked to repeat.
Melody understood that perfectly. That’s why she had used public opinion to trap her.
As much as Ginny didn’t want to admit it, in that moment, she had to.
Melody won.
She had lost.

“Your… resignation?”
The next morning, Ginny walked into the Dean’s office with her resignation letter.
The Dean, who had come to dread seeing her, barely glanced up, assuming it was another complaint about colleagues targeting her. He hadn’t expected this.
His eyes went wide with disbelief when he read the letter. After

confirming that she was fully lucid and calm, he gave her a measured smile.
“You’re really sure about this? To be honest, Ginny, I’ve always admired your skill as a doctor.
“But you know how it is. A hospital isn’t just a place to treat illness—it’s like a miniature society. Any kind of scandal can throw that whole structure off.
“As the Dean, I have my own responsibilities to consider. I hope you understand.”
Of course, Ginny understood. She never agreed with how things worked, but that didn’t mean she didn’t get it.
She’d once believed that if she just did her job well enough, if she simply fulfilled her role as a doctor with integrity, she could keep her place here.
But that wasn’t how the world worked. And things hadn’t turned out the way she thought they would.
