The General’s Regret
Chapter 41 Sorry, Professor
Lucky Draw
When the girl’s face finally came into full view, Ginny froze.
What is she doing here? Isn’t she supposed to be in the hospital?
She had never really cared much about what was going on between Chandler and Melody–until last night. Unfortunately, the hospital they’d gone to was the same one where Wendy worked.
Wendy had been on the night shift. She just so happened to witness Chandler accompanying Melody during her admission.
This morning, Wendy had been waiting outside the lab just to pass on the news. She had clearly hoped to see Ginny shocked, hurt–maybe even break down. But Ginny had only nodded, then gone right back to what she was doing.
Wendy, having been robbed of her expected reaction, had been shooting daggers at her all day.
“Who the hell are you? You think I’m just gonna leave with you because you say so? Do you even know what my boyfriend does for a living? He’s in the Special Ops Unit. Take your filthy hands off me or I’ll call the cops.”
The man had tried to use charm to lure Melody away. But she wasn’t playing along, not even a little. Annoyed, he resorted to

force.

No matter how entitled or bratty Melody was, she wasn’t a match for a full–grown man. She struggled for a bit, but soon lost the upper hand.
Just when it looked like he was about to drag her out of the bar, Ginny, driven by nothing but a basic sense of decency, stepped forward.
“Didn’t you hear her? She said she doesn’t want to go with you. Let go of her right now, or I’m calling the cops.”
She raised her phone for emphasis.
Sheila, worried Ginny might get hurt, rushed over to stand beside her. Shawn followed without hesitation.
The man looked like he wanted to bark back, but the sight of Ginny’s backup made him falter.
“I was just messing around with her.”
He let go of Melody’s wrist. Just as he was turning to leave, Melody grabbed his arm again and, with tears in her eyes, looked toward the entrance. “Chandler… help me!”
Chandler had spent the entire day busy with work. He had barely wrapped things up when he rushed to the hospital, only to find Melody gone.

After checking the surveillance footage nearby, he figured out she’d come to this part of town and followed the trail, arriving just in time to see a man still holding onto her.
Without a second thought, he stormed over and punched the guy square in the face.
Never mind that the man had already let go, Melody had been the one holding on.
Now, suddenly the one getting hit, the man was stunned and wronged.
“Are you insane?”
He looked like he wanted to make a scene, but one glance at Chandler–clearly no ordinary guy–and a second thought about Melody’s earlier comment on her boyfriend’s identity made him back off, swallowing his pride as he left.
Chandler helped Melody to her feet and began to lead her out. But then he caught sight of Ginny out of the corner of his eye and his face darkened.
“What are you doing here?”
And then, before she could answer, “Since you’re here, why’d you just stand there and watch her get harassed?”

Ginny, having stepped in to help, was now being accused of standing by and doing nothing.
She clenched her jaw and turned to leave, furious, but Chandler grabbed her arm. “What, feeling guilty now? Ginny, I can’t believe I never saw you for who you really are.”
“And who the hell are you?” Sheila snapped, stepping forward. “Which eye of yours saw her standing by and doing nothing? If she hadn’t stepped in, your precious woman would’ve been dragged out of here before you ever showed up. Yeah. Big hero moment, huh?”
But Chandler wasn’t buying it. In fact, he was starting to suspect Sheila and Ginny were conspiring together.
“Friend of yours?” He gave Sheila a condescending glance before sneering, “No wonder you’ve been acting like a different person lately. You’ve clearly been influenced by the wrong people. Don’t see her again.”
That was the last straw–even the mild–tempered Shawn lost his cool.
He couldn’t curse, didn’t have the words for it, but after stammering a frustrated “You–you–you…” for a while, he finally snapped, “We don’t want to be friends with someone who can’t even tell right from wrong.”
He pulled Sheila back toward their table.

Chandler turned to Ginny. “Let’s go.”
She stood silently, unmoving.
Wendy had been watching it all unfold, grinning.

Finally, this is how Ginny should’ve looked this morning. She’d been so calm earlier, smiling like nothing could affect her. But not now. Now, she’s finally cracking. Serves her right. Marrying into a rich family isn’t some fairytale.
Wendy watched for a while, enjoying the view. Then, pretending to be oblivious, she walked over with a bright smile.
“Ginny, is this your rich husband? We’re lab mates. Aren’t you going to introduce us?”
Sheila and Shawn both looked stunned.
This guy? This rude, arrogant man was Ginny’s husband?
What kind of taste did she have, ending up with someone like
that?
Sheila saw right through Wendy’s little performance and moved to defend Ginny, but Shawn tugged her back.
Seeing she wasn’t letting it go, he whispered, “Right now, anything you say is just going to make it worse for Ginny. The

best thing we can do is let this blow over, get her out of the spotlight.”
Sheila had been so caught up in her anger toward Chandler, she hadn’t noticed how everyone in the bar was now watching them.
Shawn’s words pulled her back. She had no choice but to sit back down.
Ginny, summoning the last of her strength, stepped toward Professor Edward.
“I’m sorry, Professor. That must’ve been embarrassing. This is my husband, Chandler… and this is his dear friend, Melody.”
