Chapter 32 What a Coincidence

Chandler was pouring Ginny a glass of water when her words made his hand tense slightly around the cup.
“I knew the day it happened. I even came back at once, didn’t I?”
Thinking back to the way they’d parted that day, the tension in the air between them, he pushed past the guilt in his chest and went on, “You fell asleep as soon as you got home. I figured… I’d talk to you properly after you woke up and ask you what was really going on. But then a mission came up. I’ve been in the field these past few days.”
In the five years they’d been married, it was the first time Chandler had ever tried to explain anything to her.
But after so many disappointments, Ginny was numb to the
effort.
“Ryan called earlier. He said he found out who framed me.”
Chandler handed her the cup. At her words, his instincts kicked in. “Who was it?”
Ginny didn’t answer. Instead, she lifted her head, her eyes bloodshot as she stared straight at him.
Chandler shifted uncomfortably under her gaze, about to look away when she tapped her phone and played a voice message.

“Edit this video to make it look like Ginny cheated. Once it’s done. I’ll give you ten thousand.”
She looked up at him and smiled faintly. “What a coincidence. It’s her again.”
The smile barely touched her lips, but the bitterness behind it was impossible to miss.
Chandler’s face flickered with panic. “That’s slander. Melody wouldn’t have any reason to do something like that.”
“And yet you’re still defending her,” Ginny said, voice rising without warning.
The sudden scream echoed through the room, like she was trying to rip out every ounce of anger she’d bottled up for days.
Her eyes were still fixed on him, but now, they held only heartbreak and disappointment.
“Ryan’s not objective. He’s got feelings for you. You really think any evidence he brings is reliable?”
Chandler started to say he would look into it himself, but Ginny cut him off. “Are you saying this recording is fake? That he paid someone to make it?”
“Fine. Then let’s take it to a professional. If I wronged Melody,

I’ll get on my knees and apologize. But if it turns out she really did this, I’m going to sue. And I’m bringing up everything she’s done to me.”
“Ginny, can you not be so unreasonable?” Chandler snapped, snatching the phone from her hand and tossing it onto the sofa. “It’s such a small thing. Why are you talking about taking it to court?”
“You think going to court is shameful?” she asked sharply. “I haven’t done anything wrong. Why should I be afraid of a lawsuit? If even the guilty aren’t afraid, what are you, a bystander, so worried about?
“You keep saying you and Melody are just friends. And that you and I are husband and wife. Tell me—do you think friendship outweighs marriage?”
All he’d said was a few words, and yet she had a whole speech ready, loaded with accusations. She made it sound like he valued Melody more than his own wife. It was nonsense.
“You’re just emotional right now. You’re acting rashly. Once you calm down, you’ll regret this.”
Seeing that she wouldn’t back down, Chandler pulled out
his phone. “Fine. I’ll call Melody right now. You two can talk face–to–face. If it really was her, I’ll make sure she apologizes to
you.”

Before Ginny could respond, he’d already hit the call button.
The line picked up quickly. On the other end, Melody’s voice came through, sweet and light.
“Chandler? You’re back? When did you get home? Have you eaten? Are you hurt? I’ve been so worried since you left for that mission…”
She went on and on, concern layered with tenderness. To anyone listening, it would’ve sounded like they were the couple.
Ginny sat in silence, lips curled into a bitter smile.
Sensing her expression, Chandler abruptly cut her off. “I just got back. I’m fine. I called to ask you something.”
Melody replied obediently, “Of course. You know I’ve never kept secrets from you. Just ask.”
He hesitated for a moment before asking, “That trending topic about Ginny cheating in the exams the other day–was it you? Did you hire someone to edit the video?”
There was a pause on the other end. Then Melody responded, voice soft and wounded, “Is that really how little you think of me? Yes, I like you. And yes, I’ve dreamed that one day you’d leave her and be with me. But not like this. I’d never do something so cruel.”

She paused, then added, “Who told you that? Was it Ginny? Is she with you right now? Give her the phone. I want to ask her myself why she’s trying to ruin me like this.”
Chandler looked over at Ginny but didn’t hand her the phone.
“She’s resting,” he said instead. “I’m the one asking you.”
There was a sharp inhale, then the sound of muffled sobs.
“Chandler, we’ve known each other for so many years. I can’t believe you’d actually suspect me. I’ve always said–whatever you care about, I care about. Whoever you love, I’ll respect. Ginny is your wife. I have no reason to hurt her. If you don’t believe me, call the police. Let them prove my innocence.”
