Chapter 28 She Hadn’t Forgotten
As soon as she heard those words, Ginny’s face visibly darkened.
She had always known Chandler didn’t feel much for her. Over the past five years, the only thing he ever seemed truly satisfied with was how well she looked after his grandparents.
That was probably the real reason he hadn’t agreed to the divorce-
Not love. Not even a trace of reluctance. Just fear of upsetting the old couple.
It was one thing to know that deep down. It was something else entirely to hear it spoken aloud.
Ginny looked at him, all strength draining from her limbs. Her expression shifted–from disappointment to a faint, bitter smile curling at the corners of her mouth.
Chandler noticed the change and opened his mouth to say something. But before he could speak, Ginny turned away and came back holding a file folder. Without waiting for his reaction, she pushed it into his arms.
Her voice was cool and composed. “Either let me go study abroad… or we get divorced. Pick one.”
Bang!

The door slammed shut behind her, and panic flared in Chandler’s eyes.

He had never liked being given ultimatums, not since he was a child. And now, with Ginny standing there and throwing a divorce agreement at him like some kind of negotiation, it made his blood boil.
Any other time, he would’ve exploded. Shouted. Even thrown the papers right back at her.
But this time was different.
This time, he saw the clarity in her eyes–an unwavering resolve —and the fire in his chest was suddenly doused by something colder. An uneasy restlessness began to settle in.
Neither of them slept that night.

The next morning, Chandler returned from his run with breakfast in hand.
Ginny was already dressed and ready to leave.
“Eat before you go,” he said, trying to sound casual, like nothing had happened.

Ginny glanced at the breakfast, her fingers tightening slightly on the strap of her bag. Then her expression went flat again. “No thanks. I’ll eat at the hospital.”
He thought she’d react like she always did–maybe sulk a bit, then let it go once he softened his tone.
But this time, she didn’t. Not even a little.
His chest tightened.
“You’re really pushing it,” he muttered. “I’ve shown you I’m trying. What more do you want from me?”
What more did she want? After all this time, after all the disappointment, maybe she didn’t even know anymore.
At the door, Ginny paused, looked at the breakfast again, then spoke, “Let me know when you’ve decided to sign the papers.”
Then she walked out.
Chandler felt like he’d thrown a punch into thin air–no resistance, no impact. Just emptiness. He needed something, anything, to channel it into.
The entire morning, he pushed himself harder than usual during training. No one knew what had triggered his fury, but his team bore the brunt of it. Every one of them was practically crawling by the time lunch rolled around.

Fortunately, Melody called just in time.
Chandler agreed to meet her for lunch, and his team got a much–needed break.

“Try this steak,” Melody said brightly, slicing a piece and holding it toward him. “It’s not quite Michelin level, but the meat’s good.”
He passed her his plate instead.
Melody faltered for a moment, disappointment flickering across her face, but placed the piece on his plate anyway.
“You seem… off today.”
She already knew what was going on–one of his teammates had messaged her in the morning, saying he was in a foul mood. Apparently, he’d had a fight with Ginny.
Melody felt a petty kind of satisfaction hearing that—but it was quickly drowned by envy.
Chandler was upset because of Ginny, which meant he cared. And if he cared this much, how could he ever leave Ginny for
her?

The thought gnawed at her. She couldn’t sit still.
So she decided to show up today, to “comfort” him–and, more importantly, to get under Ginny’s skin.
“It’s nothing,” Chandler said curtly. He never liked talking about his emotions, not even to her.
But Melody took that silence as him protecting Ginny.
Since he wouldn’t bring her up, Melody played it cool and mentioned it herself.
“I only found out from Instagram yesterday–Ginny is pretty amazing. I heard Professor Edward’s lab is overseas. If she made it in… that means she’s leaving, right?”
She watched closely. Chandler’s expression didn’t change much, but the atmosphere around him did. It was subtle, but she felt it.
She pushed a little further.
“They say Professor Edward is world–class. Practically every med student dreams of working under him. If Ginny passed his exam, she’s not going to give that up easily. She seems really career–driven. Not like me–I’d give it all up to be with someone
I love.”
Her voice softened, deliberately, like she was handing him a
choice.

She wanted him to know: She could do what Ginny couldn’t. She loved him more. She cared more.
But instead of being moved, Chandler’s face darkened further.
He didn’t argue, nor did he defend Ginny. He just muttered a quick excuse and got up to leave.
Melody sat there, watching him walk away, jealousy blooming hot and bitter behind her eyes.
Chandler… do you really care about Ginny?
It’s only been five years–have you already forgotten what you said to me back then?
Because I haven’t.
