Chapter 51 

‘Look who’s working up a sweat! Irene called from the doorway. “Breakfast’s on the table, if you guys can tear yourselves away from all this heavy lifting.” 

Thomas’s head whipped around so fast you’d think someone had shorted free money. His whole face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning. “Oh man, that smells amazing! Any chance there’s enough to go around?” 

“Last time I checked, the kitchen at your place was fully stocked, Adam drawled, his voice dry as desert sand. “Or have you been living on air lately?” 

“What? No, no, nothing like that!” Thomas practically tripped over his own words, looking like he’d just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. “It’s just… well… Dr. Sterling’s cooking is out of th world! I mean, have you tasted her pancakes? They’re to die 

for!” 

Irene couldn’t help but smirk at his not–so–subtle attempt to score a free breakfast. “Hold your horses there, buddy. The medical fee covers treatment, not five–star dining. I’m a doctor, not a personal chef.” 

“Come on, we’ll chip in for groceries!” Thomas wasn’t about to let this golden opportunity slip through his fingers. His eyes lit up with sudden inspiration. “Hey, forget about me if you have to, but think about the boss! You’re always saying how important proper nutrition is for recovery, right? This could be part of the treatment plan!” 

From the doorway came the patter of small feet as the triplets appeared. Their matching eyes lit up at the perfect chance to have their father join them for meals. 

“Mom,” Alex started eagerly, “Thomas Uncle makes a good point. You’re already cooking anyway, what’s two more people?” 

Lucas and Lily jumped in immediately, their faces arranged in perfect expressions of earnest concern. “Yeah! It’s important for Uncle 

Adam’s recovery!” 

Irene shook her head, fighting back a smile at their obvious manipulation. “Well, we’re not exactly well–off right now. If you want meals, you’ll have to contribute to the grocery budget. But remember medical fees are separate.” 

“Agreed,” Adam replied smoothly, though his eyes narrowed slightly at her claim of financial difficulty. Something didn’t add up 

there. 

“We really aren’t rich!” The triplets chimed in with suspicious quickness, exchanging looks that were just a touch too knowing. “We 

almost couldn’t afford a house! We were nearly homeless!“. 

Alex’s face scrunched up in an impressively pitiful expression. “Mom hardly ever takes wealthy patients. She usually treats serious cases that can’t pay much sometimes she even loses money helping people!” 

Adam’s brow furrowed slightly at this revelation. It certainly explained why his offers of higher payment hadn’t swayed her. Lowering his voice, he asked, “Why doesn’t she take those cases?” 

Alex shrugged, his response surprisingly genuine. “Don’t know. Mom never talks about it. 

Adam fell silent, turning this new piece of information over in his mind. A top surgeon who deliberately avoided wealthy patients? There was definitely more to Dr. Sterling than met the eye. 

After breakfast, while Adam returned home to handle necessary business matters, Irene focused on treating her grandfather. Her expert hands worked through Joseph’s back muscles, drawing out tension he hadn’t even realized was there. 

“Your skills are remarkable, Irene,” Joseph sighed contentedly. “Just two days and my back barely hurts anymore. Getting old is such

a nuisance – the smallest wrong move takes days to recover from.” 

“Don’t worry about it,” Irene smiled warmly. “I’ll keep giving you reglar massages to prevent future problems.” 

Joseph’s expression suddenly turned serious. “I’m having the company lawyers come by this afternoon to handle the share transfer. Better to get it settled and give my old heart some peace.” 

Irene’s hands stilled for a moment. “Come on, Grandfather, keep your I’m doing just fine. If I really needed cash, I could pick up a few mo 

shares,” Irene said, trying to keep her voice light. “Trust me, 

patients in a heartbeat.” 

I’ve made up my mind, and that’s that. If you’re too stubborn 

“Not gonna happen.” Joseph’s tone was pure steel wrapped in velvet. to take them for yourself, then think about those three little munchkins of yours.” 

He straightened up in his chair, grimacing as his back protested. “Listen here, young lady – when something’s got your name written all over it, you better not let pride get in the way of accepting it!”

Irene felt her throat tighten as she watched him. The fierce determination in his eyes spoke volumes – this wasn’t just about money or shares. This was his way of trying to right old wrongs, to make up for years when the family had turned their backs on her. 

“Oh, Grandfather,” she said softly, her voice thick with emotion. “You don’t owe me anything. What you’ve already done for us… if it weren’t for you having our backs when the chips were down, who knows where the kids and I would be right now?* 

“Save it,” Joseph cut in, waving off her words. “I’m not getting any younger, and these shares are just gathering dust as far as I’m concerned. Having you and those little rascals around means more than any piece of paper. And I mean it – if you don’t take them, I’m out of here!” He made a big show of trying to push himself up from his chair, though his twinkling eyes gave away the game. 

Irene recognized the stubborn set of his jaw. He was completely serious about leaving if she didn’t agree. After everything he’d done for her, she couldn’t bear to upset him like this. 

“Alright, alright!” she finally conceded. “I’ll accept them, okay?” 

Joseph immediately settled back down, already reaching for his phone to set things in motion. By afternoon, the family’s senior lawyer had arrived with all the necessary paperwork. As Irene signed her name next to her grandfather’s on the transfer documents, she couldn’t help but marvel at how life had come full circle. 

The lawyer certified everything with practiced efficiency, making the transfer official. Joseph beamed with satisfaction, while Irene just shook her head fondly at his stubbornness. Some battles, she was learning, weren’t meant to be won – especially against determined grandfathers who thought they knew best. 

As the lawyer gathered his papers to leave, Joseph’s face glowed with satisfaction. Finally, he could rest easier knowing he’d done right by his granddaughter.
