The mist from the fountain sufled around them as Adam waited for her answer, fils eyes never leaving her tare.
I would say yes, Irene whispered, het heart racing. “I love you. I think I have for a while now. She touched his cheek, feeling å jølt pass between them.
She leaned in closer. “It’s just… we still have things to figure out your family, the kids…”
“We have all the time in the world,” Adam said softly. “What matters is that we love each other. Everything else, we’ll face together.”
He kissed het palm. “I’ll wake until you’re ready.”
Irene nodded, blinking back happy tears. With him, she felt whole again.
The ride back to Emerald Garden was quiet, both lost in their own thoughts as Thomas drove them through the evening streets. When they reached the entrance, Adam insisted on seeing Irene to her door. Thomas stayed with the car as Adam wheeled alongside Irene for the final stretch, her hand resting lightly on his shoulder.
“Home at last,” she said, though her hand stayed put. “Thanks for walking me back.”
Adam looked up with a smile. “It’s right next door. Not exactly a hike” He covered her hand with his. “Besides, the longer route means more time with you.”
The front door burst open as three small figures
out into the evening air.
“Mom!” Lily squealed, throwing herself into Irene’s
Lucas and Alex crowded around Adam. “Thanks for bringing Mom home!”
“If anything, she’s the one taking care of me,” Adam said, messing up Alex’s hair.
Alex gave Lucas a conspiratorial look. “Looks like the date went well!
Irene blushed and tapped his shoulder. “Alright, troublemakers. Inside, now.”
Before leaving, Adam kissed her hand while the kids watched. “See you tomorrow.”
Irene’s eyes softened. “Tomorrow.”

The kids bounded ahead as they entered the house. In the living room, Katherine lounged on the couch alongside Brandon and Wesley. Joseph sat watching everyone from his favorite chair, looking pleased as punch.
“Hey, finished with all the treatments tonight?” Irene asked Katherine.
Katherine shrugged. “Yeah, got everyone fixed up. Even the wimps.” She glanced pointedly at Brandon.
“You’re back!” Brandon perked up. “How’d the date go?”
The triplets exchanged looks before Alex jumped in. “Uncle Brandon screams like crazy during his treatments!”
“I do not!” Brandon protested. “They’re totally making that up!”
Wesley, without changing expression, tapped his phone. Suddenly the room filled with dramatic howling and begging, amplified

perfectly by the room & countes
Irene snotted with taughter, perfectly able to pleture Brandon’s face furing his sessions.
Katherine rubbed her temples. I sweat I’m going to get headaches from all that noise
Brandon mouth fell open. After a moment, he turned to Wesley, clearly betrayed. You recorded me? Low blow, West
Wesley raised an eyebrow as he stopped the playback. “Just helping you face facts.”
“Message received, Brandon muttered, pouting. This is so humiliating
The triplets were dying of laughter, gravitating toward Wesley. Third uncle seems so cold, but he always comes through with the perfect comeback!
Joseph watched everyone with twinkling eyes. “So, how was your evening with Adam? You two looked happy coming back.”
Irene caught Lucas before he could tumble off the couch. “It was nice. I worked late, so we had dinner out, then walked to this fountain plaza where we actually saw someone propose.” Her voice caught slightly on “propose,” something sweet flashing across her
face.
She handed Lucas to Wesley, trying to hide her pink cheeks.
The triplets instantly sat up straight, saying in perfect unison: “That’s so romantic!” Their eyes sparkled.
“Since when do you three know about romance?” Irene asked, amused.
The kids straightened up even more, suddenly serious but completely adorable.
“Of course we know about romance!” they insisted. Seriously? Is that supposed to be complicated?
“We already have Adam,” Alex said earnestly, “but he should still give Mom a real proposal!” Time for phase two of the plan!
“Yeah!” Lucas and Lily nodded frantically. “With balloons and everything! And he has to kneel down! That’s how they do it in
movies!”
Brandon laughed. “Slow down, guys. They’re just getting started.”
Wesley gave Irene a knowing look. “Though things seem to be moving along nicely.”
Brandon suddenly perked up. “I’m going to propose like that someday too!”
Katherine.shot him a withering look and scoffed. “Please. As if you’d ever find a wife.”
She was clearly referring to his wimpy behavior during treatments.
“Excuse me?” Brandon straightened up, offended: “Why wouldn’t I? I’ve got the looks, the money, everything. Women line up around the block for me in Silver City.”
He dramatically flicked his hair with confidence.
Katherine rolled her eyes so hard they practically disappeared into her head.
Brandon glared right back at her. “No proper lady in Silver City would make such a crude gesture. You act like such a tomboy, Katherine. Let me tell you something–no man is going to fall for someone as brash as you.”

YouThey Immediately started bickering, each picking apart the her’s laws and insisting the other would end up alone
“See that?” Brandon appealed to Alex. “Don’t you agree? No one’s going to want someone as bossy as her.”
The triplets watched Brandon and Katherine argue, thoroughly entertained by the whole spectacle.
When suddenly put on the spot, the triplets exchanged glances before Alex spoke up. “Well, maybe you and Katherine should just get together then.”
“Totally agree!” Irene quickly raised her hand. “I fully support that idea.”
Brandon:
Katherine: “…”
Both fell silent instantly, matching looks of horror on their faces as they stared at Irene.
At his place next door, Adam sat by the window, still feeling the warmth of the evening lingering around him. His fingers traced the armrest of his wheelchair, replaying every moment with Irene at the fountain.
He’d been thinking about their future for weeks now, planning and calculating as he did with everything. But tonight, asking that question–even hypothetically–had felt right in a way few things in his life ever had.
Adam knew his family would have opinions. Maybe his mother would push another girl, and Victor would find ways to cause trouble despite being sidelined. Yet none of that seemed to matter anymore.
For once in his life, he was willing to be patient for something he couldn’t control or engineer. Irene and her children were worth the wait.
He picked up his phone, typed a message, then paused. Too formal? Too casual? He shook his head at himself–since when did Adam Haven overthink a text?
He finally sent: “Goodnight. Missing you already. Can’t wait for breakfast tomorrow.”
Back at Irene’s, her phone buzzed. Adam’s message appeared on the screen, making her feel warm all over again.
Irene touched the little neuron pendant as she typed back. Even though everyone knew about them now, these little moments still gave her butterflies.
Watching everyone interact, Irene realized the kids were even more attached to Adam than she’d thought. This new family was falling into place like it was always meant to be.
