They headed to the treatment room after dinner, where James had everything ready. Irene went straight to work, handling the equipment with quick, confident movements.
“Looking really good,” she said, getting the sticky pads ready. “You’re making great progress.”
Adam watched her work, eyes following her hands as she moved. When she turned to check a monitor, his gaze traced the curve of her neck, the way her hair fell across her shoulder.
“You should be home resting, not stuck here working late because of me.”
Irene glanced back. you want to ditch that wheelchair anytime soon, we can’t slack off”
Her casual comment sent Adam’s mind straight back to M Country–the pain shooting through his legs as he forced himself to stand up to reach her. Something must have shown on his face because Irene’s expression softened.
“Let’s check today’s readings,” she said, attaching the sticky pads with practiced hands.
Adam caught his breath when her fingers brushed against his skin, feeling tiny sparks that had nothing to do with the machine. When she turned on the equipment, her face lit up like a kid on Christmas morning.
“Oh my goodness,” she breathed, eyes wide. “That’s a 20% improvement from last week. Your body’s responding better each time.”
“Mind translating that?”
Her smile widened. “It means we might be ready for the big leagues time to try standing up.”
Adam perked up instantly. “Now?”
“We could try,” she nodded, helping him move to the standing frame. “Just don’t get your hopes too high. First tries usually last seconds, not minutes.”
She stood in front of him, hands steadying his arms as she guided him. Adam grabbed the support bars and took a deep breath
before pushing himself up.
As he pushed himself up, their faces got closer than ever before. Her hands helped just enough without doing the work for him, her eyes locked on his the whole time.
He was almost standing straight when his balance suddenly gave out. His weight tipped forward without warning, and Irene stepped in to catch him. The move backfired–his body crashed against hers, pinning her against the support frame with his full weight pressing her down.
Irene tried to adjust, shifting her trapped legs to regain balance. The movement pressed her body against his in a way that triggered an unmistakable physical reaction in Adam, making his breath catch
“Don’t move,” he said, voice dropping to a rough whisper.

Irene froze instantly. Confusion flashed across her face before understanding dawned in her eyes. A blush spread across her cheeks as she realized his arousal was pressing against her.
Adam watched realization hit her, a spark of mischief cutting through his discomfort. “This is entirely your fault, you know.”

Her breathing quickened, eyes latting everywhere but his face. Wha do we do now? she asked, afraid to move a musele,
The space between them felt super–charged. Adam could feel her hot pounding against his chest, beating as fast as his own, Having her pressed against him was sweet torture.
Right when the tension hit its peak, his phone blasted from the table They both jumped like teenagers caught making out by their parents.
After some awkward shuffling, Irene got Adam back in his wheelchal. He grabbed the phone, acting interested in Thomas’s update about Snow’s proposal while his eyes never left Irene’s flushed face.
When she packed up to leave, Adam caught her hand. “Some time tomorrow?”
Irene nodded quickly, avoiding his eyes as she grabbed her bag. She practically bolted for the door, her cheeks still burning. The electricity between them was impossible to ignore now–getting stronger every day, even if they weren’t ready to talk about what it
meant.
