Chapter 257
Chapter 257
JARIS
I didn’t think I’d seen Marta pale so quickly. I watched as the last shred of hope slowly dissipated from her eyes, replaced by a strange kind of fear.
If there was one thing Marta Monroe feared losing the r
most, it was herself.
Lyric locked her eyes on me, asking for the go–ahead.
“Okay,” she nodded, then turned to Marta.
Her hand gripped her wrist again. Her nails sank deep.
“I know where she is!”
A terrified shriek ripped the silence, only for it to be stitched back together by an unnerving stillness., broken only by Marta’s ragged breaths.
Something snapped in my chest. Something old. I realized it was the tiny shred of respect I once had for her.
“You’re right,” I could hear her loud intake of breath. “I helped Caden. G–Greta has been with me.”
I said nothing. Only stared.
The silence stretched, saying more than words could. It became unbearable, and she broke down in tears.
“I’m sorry. I just wanted you out of the way. Caden… Caden told me we could work together to achieve our goals. He said he wanted to take Greta out and find a way to use her to his benefit. He asked me to keep her hidden and I… I just wanted her gone.”
A shuddering intake of breath racked her.
“I didn’t do it to harm you, Jaris. I’ve never really liked Caden. He just…”
“He was a convenient partner,” I nodded. “So, you helped him against me. You’re aware he was plotting to create a division, yet you said nothing.”
“He told me he just wanted a share of what was his. He told me had no bad intentions toward you, Jaris. I swear, this was why I helped him. I’m so sorry.”
My hands dipped into my pockets, I turned my back against her, and laughed.
Oh, Marta. Fucking Marta Monroe.
“You didn’t care about the division, did you? It didn’t matter to you that Caden was a threat to me and had taken half of what I worked for. For you, as long as you were Luna, you didn’t give a damn.”
She whimpered. “I’m s-”
“Where is she?”
She hesitated. “My … family’s house. We have her in a secret room on the top floor.”
Wow. The entire Monroes had been in on this.
I was on her in three strides, my fingers digging into her jaw hard enough to draw blood. She squirmed in her seat. But she probably had no idea there
was so much more I wanted to do to her.
“I’ll make your life a living helt, Marta. You’ll regret the day you heard the name Jaris Dreadmoor.”
I released her with a rough shove and turned toward the door.

Chapter 257
“Since we’re revealing secrets, why don’t we go all out?”
Bitterness clung to her teary voice. I stopped, turned around to face her.
Her eyes were on Lyric. “Will you tell him, or should 1?”
“Tell me what?”
“Your beloved daughter, Jaris.” Her eyes were a stormy blend of deep sadness. “She’s a Siphon. And in addition to that, it was she who killed your mother.”
I didn’t believe it.
When Lyric had told me Marta would want to use it against her, I thought it was a lie.
My Beta and Chief of Security could not hide their shock. But there was no reaction on my face.
I retraced my steps, going back to the fallen Luna. “I know, Marta.” That was what she talked about in the car.
To say I’d been broken would be an understatement. The truth came as a bitter truth that threatened to collapse my heart. Xyla being a Siphon wasn’t something I’d have thought possible.
For a while, I’d been conflicted with my emotions until I came to terms with the fact that my little girl had been totally clueless and only wanted to save someone from my mum.
My mum. She was the reason Lyric lost our child. If Xyla hadn’t stopped her, Lyric would’ve ended up dead as well.
Though it didn’t stop me from feeling terrible about what Xyla did, but maybe I could worry about that later. For now, I needed to deal with the woman who was supposed to be her mother.
Marta looked at me with confusion. “Y–You know?”
I nodded. Lyric told me. She also told me you’d want to use it against her… but I didn’t believe it.”
Placing my hands on either side of her chair, I leaned in towards her, our faces inches apart. “Why don’t you tell me, Marta Monroe? Why would you hold your own daughter’s secret against another woman? Why would someone else be more concerned about protecting Xyla than you, who is meant to be her sole protector?”
