I should’ve quit.
But jobs were hard to come by, and I couldn’t
just run off.
Plus, my job was low-key, and I was tucked
away in a corner. Even though our
workspaces were on the same floor, he didn’t
even notice me.
I was like a rat in the gutter for two months.
Then Vince came to the office looking for
Danny.
Danny was in a meeting, so Vince started
wandering around.
I ducked my head, terrified he’d see me.
Of course, that’s when he did.
“You’re…Paris?”
“Holy crap! You followed Danny all the way
here! You really don’t give up, do you? I gotta
give you props for your persistence.”
Everyone was staring at me.
“”
I felt naked, their eyes were like whips.
My nose burned, “No, I didn’t. I got here first.
I didn’t know it would be like this…”
Danny came out of the meeting just then.
His eyes froze when he saw me, “Paris? What
<
are you doing here!”
I didn’t even get a chance to explain.
Vince pointed at my head, “What do you think
she’s doing? She’s here to chase after him,
duh. This is too good, I gotta put this on
Insta!”
Danny’s hand was shaking.
He must’ve been so embarrassed to see me
here.
“Paris, wait for me at lunch. I have something
urgent right now, but we can talk over food.”
He turned around and went into the office
with the big boss.
My coworkers were all excited, wondering
what was going on between me and Mr.
Sinclair.
Vince was about to say something, but I
looked at him with tears in my eyes, “Please,
don’t…”
He rolled his eyes and left.
I just didn’t have the guts to see Danny again.
I kept imagining myself bedridden and dying
alone.
I went to my supervisor and asked to quit.
right away.
There wasn’t much to hand over, so I packed
up everything in an hour and walked out of
that building.
