Chapter 42
Skylar let out a soft laugh, her eyes shimmering with a trace of coldness. “Freya, you seem to know more about my private life than I do myself?”
Freya looked genuinely concerned. “You’re keeping everything to yourself–we have no idea what you’ve been through. I’m only asking because I care
about you.”
Her expression drooped with hurt. “If you don’t like me worrying about you, then… I’ll stop talking.”
Carlos, seeing sparks fly between his two daughters, quickly stepped in to mediate before things got out of hand. “Alright, alright, let’s talk this through calmly. No need to argue–fighting only hurts our bond.”
Freya scoffed inwardly. She didn’t feel the slightest emotional attachment to someone trying to take everything from her.
Since returning home, Skylar had more or less figured out the personalities of everyone in the family.
Carlos did treat her well, but he was also good to Freya. After all, he had raised her for years.
But she wasn’t foolish enough to start a fight out of jealousy. That would only hurt her position. Of course, if Freya insisted on picking a fight…
Skylar lazily lifted her eyelids, a faint smile tugging at her lips as she glanced sideways at Freya. Her tone was laced with unmistakable sarcasm. “Thanks for your concern.”
Then she turned to her parents, her expression composed. “You don’t need to worry. This child isn’t some illegitimate kid I picked up. He’s the son of a business partner who asked me to help treat his illness.”
“I brought him home so I could care for him better during treatment. That’s all,” she added.
Freya wouldn’t let it go. “No blood relation, no ties whatsoever–and yet he calls you ‘Mommy‘? Who would believe that? If you keep lying like this, it’ll only make us more worried.”
“I call her Mommy because I like her! That’s it!” Adam pouted, clearly upset. “How could you say that about her? She’s not lying!”
“I didn’t-! I mean, I wasn’t trying to-”
Yana’s gaze shifted slightly as she watched Freya. She gave a light cough. “Freya.”
Freya shut her mouth immediately, lips pressed tightly together.
There was a trace of reproach in Yana’s eyes. “Freya, next time, if you don’t know the full truth, don’t jump to conclusions. Otherwise, you’ll damage Skylar’s reputation.”
Freya’s face flushed red. She lowered her head and mumbled softly, “I understand, Mom.”
Skylar’s lips curled into a cold smile. “The child has been sick since birth, his health is fragile. He can’t take emotional shocks. Please be more mindful of your words in the future.”
Adam quickly nodded in agreement. “That’s right. I have a weak heart and gets scared easily. If something happens to me, Daddy will be super mad. You’ll be in big trouble.”
Freya’s eyes instantly turned red. She kept up the act of looking pitiful, but under the surface, she clenched her fists in fury.
That little brat–how she wished she could toss him out the window.
He was just a tiny runt–she could squash him with one hand if she wanted to. But no, he had to stick to Skylar like glue and keep provoking her. She might not be able to deal with Skylar for now, but a kid? That was easy, she thought.
A dark, grim shadow flickered in her eyes.

Chapter 42
Carlos sensed the tension rising again and opened his mouth to defuse it–only to be silenced by a single look from Yana.
He awkwardly chuckled and raised his phone in front of his face to hide his embarrassment.
“Come here, sweetheart.” Yand waved Adam over gently.
Adam trotted over with quick little steps, his voice sweet as sugar and not the least bit shy. “Pretty Grandma, you’re so beautiful!”

He called her “Pretty Grandma” over and over, even raising his tiny hand to massage her legs. The sight of him being all cute and well–behaved was simply irresistible.
