Yosef let out a breathy laugh, so angry he found it funny.
He’d fed and pampered Adam with everything he could offer, and now the kid had the nerve to throw a tantrum and get mad at him?
Yet in front of Skylar, he was all sweetness and sunshine. A double standard at such a young age–unbelievable.
“Daddy, why are you looking at me like that?” Adam tilted his head suspiciously.
Yosef scoffed. “Like what?”
“With that ‘disgusted‘ look.” Adam puffed up his cheeks unhappily. “Mommy, you need to help me scold Daddy!”
Skylar glanced over at Yosef and said gently, “Adam’s a good boy. We don’t stoop to the level of bad people.”
Being praised by Mommy made Adam practically wag his little invisible tail in glee. “I’ll listen to Mommy and ignore mean Daddy.”
His smile was soft and sugary sweet, so adorable that Skylar zoned out for a moment, watching him quietly.
If that child back then had survived, they would’ve been about Adam’s age now. She had imagined countless times what her and Yosef’s child would. look like growing up. She’d even used one of those apps to simulate it.
Strangely enough, the results did resemble Adam quite a bit.
Skylar shook her head lightly, cursing herself internally. Just because the child called her “Mommy,” did she really start to believe she was his mother? Her chest tightened with unease.
Yosef, sitting to the side, could only see her profile and had no way of knowing what expression she was wearing.
After a long pause, he finally decided to take the plunge. Maybe–just maybe–it would work, he told himself.
“Skylar, I need to talk to you,” he spoke up.
Skylar looked up calmly. “Mr. Campbell, do you really think we’re still on speaking terms?”
“And for the record, I’m not part of the Stone family. My surname is Lambert. Please address me as Skylar Lambert from now on.”
Yosef latched onto the last part. “Your surname is Lambert?” he asked.
Skylar gave a lukewarm “Mm” in reply.
“Listen, I made mistakes in the past. I’m sorry,” said Yosef.
Skylar froze. In her memory, Yosef was not the type to apologize. Even when it was clearly his fault, he’d always say something cold that made her cry
instead.
This was the first time she’d heard him say sorry. Honestly, it was kind of… shocking.
Skylar’s interest was piqued. “Alright. Then kneel and kowtow to me three times, and I’ll consider forgiving you.”
Yosef didn’t get angry. He simply said, “Skylar, that’s too much.”
Skylar gave a cold laugh. “Too much? That’s rich coming from you.”
Compared to what he’d done before, what was this? She thought. He’d forced her–while pregnant–to donate blood to Elianna, and then there was the
issue with the cord blood…

Adam clung to his mommy’s arm under the covers, peeking at the adults volleying back and forth. His little head was spinning
Yoser’s expression darkened. “Skylar, I really do have something serious to discuss with you.”
“What, and I don’t?” said Skylar
“I’ve already apologized. What more do you want?” Yosef snapped.
“If apologies solved everything, what would we need the police for?” Skylar didn’t flinch.
Yosef rubbed his temple, “Skylar, you’re being unreasonable.”
“That’s right. I’m being totally unreasonable.”
Neither of them backed down, the tension crackling like static. Sensing a full–blown argument was on the horizon, Adam hurried to play peacemaker.
“Daddy, Mommy, please don’t fight. Adam doesn’t want you to fight…”
Skylar glanced down at Adam, then said nothing more. Yosef met the boy’s worried eyes and pressed his lips together.
