Chapter 270
Skylar felt an increasing sense of losing control. He had always done this, repeatedly breaking through the walls she had carefully
constructed.
Skylar despised this feeling of losing control over her emotions–a suffocating tightness in her chest. Her voice became sharp as she snapped, “Don’t ever do this again.” She added coldly, “I can protect myself just fine. I don’t need you.”
Yosef was unfazed by her harsh tone. “Whether you need it or not is your concern,” he stated firmly. “Protecting you is my responsibility.”
“Whatever,” Skylar said, unable to argue with him. She swiftly finished bandaging his wound and put the first–aid kit away.
After providing their statements to the police, Skylar and Yosef returned to the hotel. Given the dangerous conditions outside today, they stayed indoors all afternoon and didn’t venture out again.
Those people must have shaken Adam–he came down with a fever right after he returned. Skylar worked tirelessly for hours, administering an injection and giving Adam medicine, before finally bringing down his high fever.
Still shaken from the morning’s ordeal and feeling utterly drained after caring for Adam, Skylar slumped over the bedside and fell asleep instantly. Concerned that she might be uncomfortable, Yosef gently lifted her and placed her on the other side of the bed, beside Adam.
Yosef quietly removed his shoes, dampened a towel, and gently leaned over to wipe Skylar’s face, helping her sleep more comfortably. After he finished, he gazed at Skylar’s delicate features. On impulse, he leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her forehead, whispering, “Skylar, no matter what you say, I’ll never give up on you.”
Yosef recognized that Skylar was burdened by emotional pain, which was why she resisted his efforts to connect. He was determined to untangle the emotional knots, rekindle her love for him, and bring her back to his side. This time, Yosef would dedicate himself to protecting Skylar and Adam, never allowing her to endure even the slightest suffering again.
Skylar stirred slightly in her sleep but remained asleep. Yosef gently tucked the blanket around her, then turned and settled onto the sofa, checking work messages on his phone.
The sofa was positioned with its back to the bed, so Yosef didn’t notice when Skylar’s eyes fluttered open as he turned away. Skylar lay with tired eyes fixed on the ceiling. She had woken up the moment she felt the unsettling sensation of being lifted, although she kept her eyes
closed.
She was still half–asleep and just wanted to doze off again after settling into bed. She never imagined that Yosef would kiss her. That single moment shattered the calm in Skylar’s heart, leaving her in a state of complete turmoil.
His late–showing affection genuinely flustered Skylar. She was unsure how to confront Yosef–the man she had once loved so deeply. Although she wanted to cut all ties, she couldn’t ignore that Adam needed Yosef.
But the idea of simply forgiving Yosef, letting go of all the pain those misunderstandings had caused, and getting back together with him felt impossible for Skylar. Her heart wouldn’t allow it. At that moment, her mind was a tangled mess, like a ball of yarn that became more knotted the harder she tried to unravel it.
Skylar closed her eyes and thought, ‘Forget it. Overthinking won’t help. I’ll focus on taking things one day at a time!
Skylar had no idea when she had fallen asleep. When she woke up, the coffee table in the room was filled with food. Adam was enjoying his meal, occasionally pausing to give Yosef a bite.
Yosef wasn’t used to Adam’s attentiveness. Reaching for the spoon, he asserted, “I’m fine. I can do it myself.”
Adam stepped back and asked with concern, “Dad, is your hand alright for sure?”
