Yosef rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Skylar, do you always have to make things so difficult?”
“I’m not the one making a scene,” Skylar said, her voice even. “I’m trying to have a civil conversation.”

“Besides,” she continued, “our divorce would free you up for your precious Elianna, wouldn’t it? Then she wouldn’t have to put up with the charade of being your ‘fiancée‘ and feel so aggrieved.”
Yosef lowered his gaze. “I’m not going to marry her,” he said softly.
Skylar scoffed. He’d paraded Elianna around as his fiancée; everyone knew. How did he plan to get out of that without marrying her?
“So, the great Mr. Campbell is stringing her along while keeping me on the hook? Trying to have your cake and eat it too?” Skylar asked.
Yosef looked up, his eyes fixed on her. “I never said she was my fiancée.”
Skylar frowned. ‘Not your fiancée? Then why is that all over the news?‘
Yosef said, “She arranged for those reports herself.”
“Even if that’s true, Mr. Campbell, you never denied it, did you?” Skylar said.
Yosef fell silent. He hadn’t denied it.
Elianna had asked him to grant her some dignity.
Yosef’d agreed, partly because she was supposedly Adam’s mother and partly due to a past debt he felt he owed her.
So, when the news broke, he never bothered to correct it.
“Yosef, whatever we had ended five years ago,” Skylar stated. “Dragging this out now is just torment for both of us.
“Let’s just get the divorce over with. We’ll both be free.”
Skylar had no desire to get further entangled with Yosef. She had important things to do and zero energy to waste on him.
“I’ll get Adam treated as soon as possible and send him back to you,” she added.
Yosef nodded curtly. “Thank you.”
He could see Skylar didn’t want to talk anymore, so he turned and left.
When Elianna woke up in her hospital room, Yosef was sitting by her bedside. “Yosef… ” she murmured.

“Why?” Elianna couldn’t accept it. “I gave you Adam! But ever since he was born, you’ve been so cold to me. What did I do wrong?
