Chapter 205: Broken Promises
(Emma’s POV)
“Emma, Daddy needs to rest. I’ll visit you later. Go home and get some rest.”

The words cut through me like a silver blade. Daddy’s voice had an edge I’d never heard before–cold and distant. His amber eyes, usually so warm when they looked at me, now seemed like they belonged to a stranger.
I took a hesitant step toward his hospital bed. “But Daddy, I just wanted to-
Maxwell Chen stepped between us, his tall frame blocking my path. “Miss Emma, Alpha Stone needs to rest. If you care about him, you should listen and not add to his
worries.”
Tears welled
up in my eyes. This wasn’t how things were supposed to be. Daddy
always welcomed me with open arms, always made time for me no matter what.
“Daddy?” My voice came out as a whimper, my wolf curling into a tight ball beneath
my skin.
But Daddy just closed his eyes, turning away from me. The message was clear–he
didn’t want me here.
Each step toward the door felt heavier than the last. I kept glancing back, hoping he’d
call me to his side, tell me everything was okay, that he still loved me.
He never did.
What if Daddy stopped loving me forever? The thought made my chest tighten
painfully. If he abandoned me, would Mommy do the same?
Victoria was waiting in the car, her face a perfect mask of composure. But I knew
better. The slight tightening around her eyes, the rigid set of her shoulders–she was
furious.
“He didn’t want to see me,” I whispered, sliding into the seat beside her.
She didn’t respond immediately. The silence was worse than any scolding.

“Mommy?” I reached for her hand, desperate for reassurance.

She pulled away, her eyes cold as she finally looked at me. “This is your fault, Emma. You failed to make him forgive us.”
Though she hadn’t physically hurt me in a long time, her coldness was far more frightening. I lunged forward, wrapping my arms around her waist.
“Mommy, don’t give up on Emma. I’ll find a way for Daddy to forgive us,” I promised, my voice breaking. “I’ll make him love us again!”
Victoria’s hand came to rest on my head, not quite a caress. “If you can’t make Ethan change his mind, we’ll lose him. You don’t want to lose both of us, do you?”
Fear shot through me like ice water. “No! I’ll make Daddy forgive us. I’ll make him come back to us.”
I wouldn’t let Olivia Winters steal my Daddy away. I couldn’t.
The next morning, I made my decision. If Daddy wouldn’t come to me, I would go to
him.
I slipped out of Rosewood Haven while Mommy was meeting with her friends. I turned off the tracking bracelet Daddy had given me and made my way to Stone Pack Enterprises in the pouring rain.
My clothes were soaked through by the time I reached the towering building. Security
wouldn’t let me in–they said Daddy was in an important meeting. So I waited outside,
shivering as the cold rain pelted my skin.
Hours passed. My teeth chattered, and my wolf whimpered beneath my skin, seeking
warmth that wasn’t there.
Then suddenly, I saw him–Daddy, rushing out of the building, his face tight with worry. He was scanning the area, his nostrils flaring as he tried to catch a scent.
“Daddy…” The word escaped me as a weak whimper.
His head snapped toward me, amber eyes widening in shock. In an instant, he was at
my side, wrapping his Black Alpha Overcoat around my trembling form.
“Emma! What are you doing here?” His voice was a mixture of anger and concern as
he lifted me into his arms.

I couldn’t answer. My teeth were chattering too hard, and relief made my limbs go limp. He’d come for me. He still cared.

Daddy carried me inside, barking orders at his staff. I should have felt happy, but something was wrong. My body felt stiff in his arms, unable to melt into his embrace like I usually did.
My wolf, normally so eager for his attention, curled into a defensive ball. It was as if
some part of me was afraid to trust his affection.
Daddy brought me to his office’s private rest area. He arranged for a female pack
member to help me shower and laid out warm clothes.
“Take a hot bath first, then we’ll talk, okay?” His voice was gentle, the way it used to
- be.
Something inside me broke. “Daddy, I thought you didn’t love me anymore, that you
didn’t want me…” The words tumbled out between sobs.
Daddy’s face crumpled with guilt. He knelt down to my level, his large hands cupping my face. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have neglected you because of pack business. Be good, take a bath so you don’t catch a cold.”
I nodded, wiping my tears with the back of my hand. “Okay, Daddy.”
After my bath, I learned that Daddy had refused to let Mommy come get me. He’d
even instructed security to block her if she tried to enter the building.
Dr. Harold Bennett arrived to check me over. His weathered face creased with
concern as he examined me.
“Luckily, you found her in time,” he told Daddy. “She’s still recovering from her kidney transplant and can’t handle getting sick.”
my head, suddenly ashamed of worrying everyone. “I’m sorry, Daddy. I just
d to see you.”
addy’s expression was stern, but his voice remained gentle. “Emma, you can’t run away like that. You scared everyone. Promise me you won’t do it again.”
“I promise, Daddy.” I looked up at him with wide eyes. “Can I stay with you today? I won’t disturb you while you work.”

His face softened. “Alright. But you have to be quiet and let me finish my work.”

Daddy provided me with my favorite venison jerky and moonberry juice. He set me up
with a book while he returned to his desk.
I pretended to read, but really, I was watching him. The way his brow furrowed when
he concentrated. How his fingers tapped the desk when he was thinking. These quiet
moments with him were rare treasures.
When evening came, Daddy closed his laptop and stretched. “Hungry, Emmy?”
My heart leapt. “Yes, Daddy!”
“Let’s go get dinner, then.” He held out his hand to me.
We went to Amber Crest Restaurant, the most prestigious dining establishment in
Shadow Creek. I clung to his hand, determined to be the perfect daughter–obedient,
sweet, eager to please.
I smiled at all the right times. I ate neatly, the way Mommy had taught me. I didn’t
whine or complain once.
After dinner, as Daddy drove me home to Rosewood Haven, I gathered my courage.
“Daddy, will you come with me to the Moonlight Fair for my birthday this year?”
The question hung in the air between us. Last year, Daddy had promised to take me,
but then Olivia Winters had called. She’d begged him to take Lily instead, and he’d
abandoned me without a second thought.
Mommy’s words echoed in my mind: “Without blood tíes, you’ll never be as important
to him as Lily.”
That day had been Lily’s birthday too. She’d gone to the Moonlight Fair alone with her. mother, waiting for Daddy who never came. And then she’d died.
After that, Daddy never took me to the Moonlight Fair again.
I saw the hesitation in his eyes, the way his grip tightened on the steering wheel.
“It’s okay if you can’t,” I said quickly, forcing a smile. “I’m happy as long as you can spend time with me.”
My disappointment must have been obvious because Daddy’s expression softened.

“Alright, I will take you to the Moonlight Fair,” he promised.
Joy exploded through me. I threw myself across the seat to hug him, my wolf yipping with happiness beneath my skin.
I wouldn’t lose to Lily this time. Not again.
When we arrived at Rosewood Haven, Mommy was waiting in her wheelchair. Her face was cold and distant until I whispered in her ear about Daddy’s promise.
Only then did her expression change. A rare smile curved her lips as she patted my head. “Good girl, Emma.”
On my birthday, I woke up early, buzzing with excitement. I put on my prettiest dress and the moonstone pendant Daddy had given me last year.
I sat by the window, watching for his car. Morning turned to afternoon. I called him, but he didn’t answer. I sent messages that remained unread.
“He’s not coming, is he?” Mommy said, her initial hope of joining our celebration fading with each passing hour.
“He promised,” I insisted, though doubt gnawed at me.
Evening came. Then night. And with it, news that shattered my heart–Daddy had spent the entire day at Sacred Moonlight Cemetery, at Lily’s grave.
Mommy’s face contorted with rage. “Your Daddy would rather talk to a dead girl than be with you! What’s the point of you living if you can’t even compete with a corpse?”
She rammed her wheelchair into me, the impact sending me stumbling backward. The physical pain was nothing compared to the agony in my chest.
Still, I couldn’t believe it. Daddy had promised. He wouldn’t abandon me for Lily. Not again.
I sat outside on the porch of Rosewood Haven as night fell, my mind swirling with resentment. Why did Lily still have such a hold on him? She was dead. Gone. Yet she still stole my Daddy’s love
It wasn’t fair. I’d done everything right. I’d been the perfect daughter. Yet Daddy still
chose her.

Eventually, the cold night air and my broken heart became too much. I collapsed in
tears and retreated to my room.
(Ethan’s POV)
The cold stone of Lily’s grave felt right against my knees. I’d been here since dawn,
burning wolfsbane incense offerings, my heart heavy with grief.
On my phone, I played old pack surveillance footage of Lily–my true daughter, the
pup I had failed so completely.
“Look at her,” I whispered to no one, watching Lily’s small form on the screen. “She
was so brave, even when she was in pain.”
The footage showed her at her training den, smiling despite her illness. Always
smiling, never complaining.
Remorse crushed me like a physical weight. “Lily, Daddy was wrong! Can you come
back to Daddy?”
Tears streamed down my face as I placed fresh moonflowers on her grave. My wolf
howled mournfully within me, grieving the pup we had lost through our own neglect.
I stayed there, lost in sorrow, until the cemetery grew dark around me.
When the town’s clock struck midnight, reality crashed back. Emma’s birthday–I had
forgotten completely.
I checked my phone, my stomach dropping at the sight of her missed calls and messages. The last one, sent hours ago, simply read: “Daddy, I’m still waiting for you.”
Guilt overwhelmed me. I drove to Rosewood Haven, using my Alpha authority to slip inside quietly. In my pocket was Emma’s birthday gift–a special Moonstone Bracelet
I’d had custom–made for her.
