Erica had been grumbling and cursing, but after hearing what I said, she paused for a moment, then started feeling around for the rope behind me.
The rope was tied tight. We struggled hard and only managed to loosen it a little.
Luckily, the ritual was taking a long time, which gave us more time.
No one knew how much time had passed, but the blood in the monk’s bowl was almost gone when we finally got the rope undone.
I rushed forward without a second thought and grabbed the frog tight, squeezing it so hard that its eyeballs popped out.
“Stop!”
Selene screamed her lungs out and lunged at me to snatch the frog.
Julian’s expression changed instantly, twisted with panic.
But I was already in a do–or–die mindset. I used all my strength. The frog was so small that with one squeeze, it died completely.
“You bitch, I’m taking you down with me!”
Selene’s eyes were bloodshot and she looked like she was about to strangle me to death. But before her hands could reach my neck, her body suddenly jolted and froze.
It was Erica!
She took advantage of the chaos, grabbed the knife and stabbed it into Selene’s heart. Erica yanked the knife out fiercely, blood splashing all over her face. Her eyes were filled with murderous rage and she plunged the knife into Julian’s chest as well.
“You said you’d give me billions and you said you’d marry me, but that’s all lies! You ruined my life! You all deserve to die!”
Just as I expected, the shock drove Erica over the edge. She completely lost it and got stuck in her own thoughts. Her reaction was pretty much what I had imagined.
“And you, bald–ass monk! You’re also a liar!”
Erica tried to stab the monk again, but this was already her third attempt. The monk was ready this time. In the struggle, the knife ended up stabbing her in the chest.
Three people were seriously hurt in an instant and the Blakes had no choice but to call an ambulance.
There was no way to keep what happened today a secret anymore. It quickly caught the attention of the police.
The police interrogated the monk.
The other half of the secret that had been haunting me finally came to light.
It turned out that two years ago, when Selene was about to give birth, she was followed by underworld enemies on her way to the hospital and got into a car accident.

By the time Julian arrived with help, the unconscious and injured Selene was retrieved, but their child had, unfortunately, suffocated to death.
Julian loved Selene deeply. He was just relieved that she was safe and comforted her, saying they could have another child in the future, but she couldn’t move on at all.
Selene sought out the monk to perform rites to release the soul of the dead child, hoping he would be reincarnated into her body again.
But the monk said the baby hadn’t died, he had swapped bodies with a frog in the river.
They had found the frog and for two years, they used a specific ritual to nourish its soul. Once that was done, it could turn back from a frog into an embryo.
As long as they transplanted the embryo into Selene’s body, the mother–and–son bond could be restored.
To nourish the soul, they had to find a girl with the same fate who was born in the same
year.
They needed one bowl of blood from her heart every day, once she lost all her blood, the ritual would be complete.
But they had already tried with nine different girls over the course of a year and every attempt had failed.
Later, a high monk read in an old book that just feeding the soul wasn’t enough. The girl also had to become the child’s mother in name only. Only then would the frog be willing to turn back into an embryo.
That was why Julian was desperate to get the wedding done and Selene had no objections.
I was supposed to be the chosen one, the girl with the same fate in her birth year. They had carefully set everything up to lead me to the temple.
But no one expected Erica to suddenly step in and drop her own blood onto the frog.
Once blood was dropped, the contract was sealed, meaning only her blood could be used for the ritual.
And by the look of things, this was their last chance.
So they came up with a compromise; first, feed Erica with my blood, then have the monk cast a spell to transfer it to her heart and finally give it to the frog.
Based on his confession, the police dug up the white bones of nine girls in the Blakes‘ backyard garden.
No wonder the peonies bloomed so beautifully… It was because of this.
Julian and Selene were both saved, but with nine lives on their hands, they were sentenced to death just like the monk.

Selene had already gone insane. She kept holding onto the mud, saying it was her baby frog.
As for Erica, she died on the way to the hospital. Before she passed, she kept muttering about wanting to do it all over again.
But life doesn’t give you that many second chances. When she closed her eyes, all the grudges ended with her.
