Chapter 6
Evan’s expression shifted rapidly, his eyes turning cold and vicious. “Just because you say it’s mine, I’m supposed to believe you?”
“It’s true. I’m already three months along. Remember when you tricked Elira into going on that business trip to Boston? You stayed with me the whole week.” Aveline’s tears streamed down her face in big, glistening drops.
I could only laugh at the absurdity of it all.
So that business trip to Boston–turns out their affair went on even longer than I thought.
Evan pressed his lips into a hard line and looked at me. “Elira, if her child is mine, can’t we just raise it under your name? You have my word, from now on, you’ll be the only one for me, I-”
Smack! My hand slapped across his face, cutting him off mid–sentence.
“Evan, you’re unbelievable. You really are the lowest of the low, and you still have the nerve to ask me to raise your child?
“We’re through. From now on, stay away from me.”
I turned and walked away, ignoring the chaos behind me. My mother chased after me, refusing to let up.
“How could you be so rash? Who’s going to want a divorced woman like you?
“Listen to me—just let me take care of your money, and I’ll find you another good man.”
I stopped in my tracks and stared her down.
“A good man? What, some fool, or a cripple? Maybe someone old or divorced himself?
“You think I don’t know what you’re after? Let me make this clear–even if I die, every last cent I have will go to charity. Not a penny will end up with you or that idiot brother of mine.”
Her eyes went wide as she realized she wouldn’t get a dime out of me. She immediately flew into a tirade. “How did I end up with a daughter like you, you worthless-”
When I was a teenager, her words made me cry countless times. Even the little money I earned from part–time jobs was stolen to buy my brother new clothes.
Back then, my life was nothing but darkness. Evan tossed me a scrap of warmth, and I clung to it as if my life de- pended on it.
But now I see–cutting all ties is the only way forward.
I returned to the tiny apartment I’d bought for myself.

It was around the time the Corven family’s finances were falling apart, and ironically, it was also when our relation- ship was at its best.
Though Evan never touched me, he poured his heart into everything else.
He wrote me stacks of love letters, each word once so moving it brought me to tears.
Now, I felt nothing but bitter irony.
I opened the box of letters and dumped them out the window. Papers fluttered everywhere, landing right on Evan’s face as he arrived below.
He looked up at me, eyes red, meeting my icy stare. “Elira.”
With a slam, I shut the window, unwilling to see that hypocritical face again.
He ran upstairs, calling my name through the door. “Elira, I swear, I was out of my mind. You’ve always been the only one in my heart.
“Please, just give me one more chance, okay?”
I yanked the door open and grabbed his wrist in disgust. He instinctively gagged but forced himself to swallow it down.
My jaw clenched tight.
“You claim to be a germaphobe, but you react most violently to me. How dare you humiliate me like this?
“Evan, what right do you have to ask for my forgiveness?”
His eyes trembled as he dropped his head in defeat.
“Because… of that night, six years ago.”
