A deathly silence fell over the room.
Evan finally snapped out of it, rushing toward me in desperation. “Elira, what are you talking about? How could we possibly be getting divorced?”
I looked at him, half–smiling, half–mocking.
“Why not?
“Oh, is it because you didn’t get your wish to throw me out with nothing?
“Or is it…” I suddenly shoved Aveline into his arms, “That you can’t even touch me, but you can’t keep your hands off your precious little intern every night?”
Aveline shot him a panicked glance. “Evan, she… she’s lying about me. You’re the only man I’ve ever been with.”
“I never meant to leave you with nothing. I only said that to shut her up.” Evan shoved her aside, his lips bloodless. “Elira, I can explain, I-”
His mouth opened and closed, but not a single explanation came out.
“What is it? The whole city of New York knows about your germophobia,” I sneered. “But now, with this tramp, you seem to have quite the appetite.
“Evan, after being married to you, I think I’m developing a phobia myself. Honestly, you’re just filthy.”
He staggered forward, grabbing my hand–only to flinch back as if burned. “Elira, I really can’t divorce you. I never signed anything, I—”
“Did you forget the promise you made me on our wedding night, Evan? I’m the one who doesn’t want you anymore.” I pulled out the divorce papers, my smile icy.
When my mother saw the divorce agreement, she finally snapped to her senses. Her eyes went wild as she lunged at me, trying to snatch it away.
“You ungrateful bitch, how could you do this to Evan?
“I’m telling you, he’s the only one I’ll ever recognize as family,
“Every successful man has women on the side, but you can’t tolerate it? All because you can’t give him a child!”
Even after giving up on her long ago, I still found it both laughable and pathetic.
“What even are you, Mother? He claimed he was such a germophobe he couldn’t touch me, let everyone point fingers at me, and then slept around behind my back.

“You want me to have a baby? Forget it!
“All those supplements you forced down my throat–you should’ve taken them yourself.”

My mother was completely unhinged now. My brother, lazy and useless, had lived off Evan’s money for years. With- out that cash cow, she was desperate.
Watching her tear the divorce agreement to shreds, I laughed with pure, biting sarcasm.
“You’re done? That was just a copy. I can print a hundred more if you like.
“But this marriage? I’m ending it.”
Evan’s eyes were bloodshot. “Elira, we’ve been together for ten years. Can you really just walk away?”
I threw the divorce papers in his face.
“Evan, you should’ve thought of this the day you cheated.
“Ten years–five of them spent being bled dry by my mother, five spent being ignored and neglected by you.
“This so–called decade of love? Most of it was built on my suffering.
“How dare you even bring it up!”
He closed his eyes, voice choked with emotion. “Elira, I know you’re angry. I’ll get rid of Aveline, okay? Can you just give me one more chance?”
“Evan, what are you saying? Don’t you love me?” Aveline’s voice trembled, her disbelief plain as day.
“The only one I ever loved is Elira. You were just young and fresh, and I thought you’d be a fun distraction.” Evan shot her a look as cold as ice. “Turns out, you’re just a two–faced slut.”
As the bodyguards started toward her, Aveline completely broke down, screaming, “Evan, you can’t do this to me! I’m expecting your child!”
