The last time I saw Nathaniel was at the university entrance. I had just walked out of the campus gates when I spotted him.
He had changed dramatically, looking utterly haggard. Though Christmas wasn’t that old and was dressed appropriately and fashionably, his entire being radiated exhaustion and despair.
Our eyes met, and there was nowhere to hide.
He tugged at the corner of his mouth, trying to smile, but his lips barely moved before giving up entirely.
“Long time no see.” I greeted him calmly. “Mr. Mercer, I have things to do. I’ll be going now.
Nathaniel blocked my path, hesitating before finally saying in a low voice, “I miss you so much.”
I felt no emotional response whatsoever.
He stared at me in a daze. “I’m sorry. It must have been so painful back then.”
I pressed my lips together and said nothing.
Slowly, he pulled a familiar vial from his pocket, closed his eyes, and placed the cold test tube in his mouth.

I understood–this was for the best. He probably wouldn’t bother me anymore.
Soon, he experienced a violent drug reaction.

His face flushed red, veins bulging on his neck as he clutched at his throat in agony, making harsh gasping sounds.
His body swayed before he collapsed to his knees, the test tube shattering and scattering glass shards across the ground.
Pale–faced and kneeling, he began retching uncontrollably, his exposed skin bleeding from the glass cuts.
The stomach is an emotional organ–when someone is overwhelmed with grief, they instinctively feel nauseous.
I wondered if I had looked this pathetic back then, and surprisingly, I felt a strange sense of gratitude toward him.
