Nathaniel’s
‘s eyes reddened again, filled with anguish: “But Mae, you’d rather torture me, rather watch me collapse in the pouring rain, than forgive me. All because of what happened that month, even though you… even
even though you…‘
!!
His voice choked up, unable to continue.
“I’m listening. Go on,” I said calmly.
He wiped away the tears from the corners of his eyes and took a deep breath: “Even if you told me directly that you wouldn’t forgive me, I could accept that. But you had to pretend to have amnesia.”
His voice broke again: “You’re torturing me like this, making me relive over and over how I personally forced you to drink that potion, how I personally destroyed my own happiness.”
“Can’t you really let me put the ring back on your finger?”
I shook my head firmly: “Mr. Mercer, I won’t.”
After hearing this, Nathaniel looked at me in disbelief.
Suddenly his phone rang.
A male voice came through: “Professor Mercer, the drug’s

effectiveness isn’t one hundred percent. It does work, but its efficacy is affected by the subject’s emotional state.”
“What did you say?!” Nathaniel’s voice began to tremble.

“We referenced the latest research findings and discovered that if the subject’s desire to forget is too intense, then even if the amnesia drug fails, the subject still can’t recall the relevant content. Recovery drugs won’t work either.”
“This type of forgetting is irreversible, Doctor! This is the first time we’ve discovered this phenomenon – it’s enough for another Science publication! Hello…”
Nathaniel didn’t hear what came next. He only caught the phrase “this type of forgetting is irreversible.”
Irreversible.
“Nathaniel,” I spoke up. “The human body is amazing. When someone suffers severe trauma, the brain activates protective mechanisms to shield them, making them permanently forget certain things.”
“Psychological defense mechanism,” I looked up at him. “Freud’s theory – you should be very familiar with it.”
My brain chose to help me forget the pain when I suffered greatly, allowing me to survive.

Nathaniel froze. He seemed to realize I wasn’t pretending to have amnesia – I had truly, completely forgotten him.
The moment he decided to force that potion down my throat, the outcome was already sealed.
I finally turned and walked away with determined steps, but the instant I turned around, tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.

Just like countless times before, crying inexplicably without
reason.
But I had a feeling this would be the last time.
I heard Nathaniel collapse behind me, along with the shocked cries of passersby and the commotion of people rushing to help.
But none of that concerned me anymore.
I had broken free from everything in my past. All those things that made my heart ache to the point of suffocation were over.
I was going to embrace a future without him. Goodbye.
Months later, Yelena came to see me with shocking news Jolene really had gotten cancer, and her funeral was already
over.

“So you really can’t just say things carelessly – what if they actually come true?”
Yelena sighed, and I completely agreed.
