Seeing me call the police, Nathaniel’s voice trembled, as if he couldn’t believe I was truly this heartless.
“Just because I went to accompany my cancer–stricken sister through her final month? Is this really necessary?”
Yelena couldn’t stand it anymore: “Sister? You mean your first love!”
She pulled out her phone, scrolled through our chat records, and shoved it right in Nathaniel’s face. The screen was filled with intimate photos of Jolene and Nathaniel.
Nathaniel’s face went pale when he saw those photos.
But Yelena wasn’t letting him off the hook: “This is your sister! What kind of siblings get married, go on a honeymoon, and provoke the legal wife? Is she your biological sister?”
Yelena ruthlessly exposed Nathaniel’s lies. He fell silent, his earlier arrogance completely deflated.
After a long pause, his tone softened: “Mae, I’m sorry. Jo and I grew up together. Her parents entrusted her to me on their deathbed. She lost her parents and has cancer–I couldn’t possibly deny her final wish…”

He gazed at me with deep emotion, his eyes full of remorse and sincerity: “I was wrong. I swear I’ll never see her again, except for her funeral. Please don’t say you don’t know me anymore. My heart is breaking.”
How touching. If this were a TV drama, I should be crying through half a box of tissues by now. Too bad I’m the one living through this.

I wasn’t moved at all: “Mr. Mercer, I’m saying this for the last time–we’re impossible. If you keep harassing me, I’ll file for a restraining order.‘
I delivered my ultimatum. Nathaniel looked wounded, raising the test kit again with tears in his eyes: “China’s top medical team ran over a thousand tests. The kit is fine–you’re just trying to spite me.”
I rolled my eyes and dialed the police again: “Officer, please hurry. I’m really scared.”
Seeing my annoyance, he sighed: “Mae, I can leave, but I’ll find every way possible to prove my love for you. I won’t give up.”
With that, he finally turned and left.
Yelena watched his retreating figure and couldn’t help saying: “What an act.”

Then she spat.

I laughed: “Don’t, don’t, don’t–don’t lower yourself for someone like that.”
Two days later after work, a G–Wagon was parked at the school entrance. Nathaniel stood in a black suit, his long legs casually leaning against the car door, devastatingly handsome. The trunk was filled with calla lilies, drawing a crowd of onlookers.
My heart skipped a beat. I had to admit, Nathaniel was indeed handsome–from a purely physical standpoint, he was one in a
million.
Unfortunately, everything he did disgusted me beyond words.
“Mae.” He picked up a large bouquet of calla lilies and walked toward me. “Do you remember? On our first date, we saw a field of calla lilies, and you said you loved them.”
His smile was radiant, and something in his expression gave me a fleeting sense of familiarity, as if years ago, some young man had also held a large bouquet of calla lilies and smiled at me without reservation.
I was momentarily dazed. Wasn’t he insulting calla lilies?
Calla lilies symbolize unwavering, faithful love. How dare he give me these?

I said helplessly: “Nathaniel, just pretend I’m faking it and leave me alone, okay? Whether my amnesia is real or fake, I don’t love you anymore. When you walked toward me with those flowers, my stomach nearly cramped up. I felt nauseous, like I wanted to throw up.”
“You’re a neuroscientist–you must have studied psychology. Have you heard of physiological attraction?”
“When someone likes another person, they unconsciously want physical contact, want to get closer. But seeing you just makes me want to run away.”
“Toward you, I only feel physiological revulsion.”
Actually, I knew that Nathaniel had indeed once been part of life.
