But Lachlan doesn’t beat me, and Mr. Walker doesn’t beat his wife either! The Walker family feeds me well and takes good care of me!
I became wary of Ruby and said, “Mr. Walker promised to give my mom money. I saw Mr. Walker had all the furniture taken away and sold. He’s still worrying about the rest of the money!”
Ruby visibly relaxed, “No wonder it’s so empty here. So they sold everything? Your mom thought the Walker family was going to run away. She sent me over to check on you.”
It must have been that Mr. Walker was seen getting a truck to move things, and my mom found out. So she sent Ruby over to investigate.
At noon, Mrs. Walker wanted to invite Ruby to stay for lunch, but Ruby quickly refused and left the Walker’s compound.
In the afternoon, Lachlan found out that my mom had gone to Ruby’s house again a couple of days ago, stayed for half a day, and came out smiling. It seemed Ruby had agreed to marry my brother.
From what Ruby said, it sounded like she had agreed.
After going around in a big circle, Ruby was still going to marry my brother, and willingly at that.
I didn’t understand Ruby, and I didn’t want to understand anymore.
Ruby knew what kind of person my brother was, yet she still wanted to marry him, and even listened to my mom and came to try to persuade me. So I pretended not to know.
“Brynn!” Lachlan stood up, “It’s wrong for men to hit women!”
He patted his chest, promising he would never hit me in the future.
He must have heard what Ruby said to me.
“i will never abandon you! Wherever you go, I’ll be there!”
After dinner that night, Ruby came to see me again, asking if Mr. Walker had gathered the money for my mom. She said my mom would come early tomorrow morning to get the money, and not to delay my brother’s surgery.
I asked Ruby, “How much betrothal gift did my mom give you?”
Ruby didn’t admit it at first, but when she saw I wasn’t speaking, she confessed, “Your mom gave me four thousand eight hundred, and gave my mom ten thousand. Tomorrow morning, when Mr. Walker gives your mom another thirty thousand, after deducting your brother’s surgery fees, your mom and my mom will split the rest. Only then will I agree to marry your brother.”
