Chapter 2
Luck was on my side, and we both got jobs at Skyline Group.
During the three–month probation period, we kept our relationship a secret, quietly helping each other out.
I thought we’d both make it through, until I accidentally overheard his boss talking to him in the break room.
That’s when I found out the company was only keeping one intern, and his boss wanted him to step up.
I was afraid Ethan would impulsively quit to give me the spot, so I rushed back to my desk and wrote my resignation
letter.
HR tried to talk me out of it for half a day, but I didn’t budge.
When I got home, Ethan kept asking why I quit.
I made up some excuse, and he bought it, ruffling my hair and saying.
“If you don’t want to do it, don’t. I’ll take care of you.”
After quitting, I couldn’t find a suitable job.
At first, Ethan did give me half his salary.
But over time, it became less and less, until he stopped altogether.
I tried to ask him about it, but he always had an excuse.
Sometimes it was bad sales, other times it was expenses for client meetings.
I couldn’t bring myself to push further, so I started selling my bags and clothes to pay the rent.
The things I brought from home slowly disappeared, but Ethan never noticed or asked.
Eventually, I had to take a job as a clerk at the delivery hub.
When Ethan found out I had a job, he just hugged me and said, “My baby’s so amazing.”
Before I could respond, he got a call from his boss and rushed out.
To this day, he still doesn’t know I work at the delivery hub.
I blinked back tears, put the suitcase in the closet, and went to bed.
As I drifted off, I felt the bed shake.
I thought I was dreaming and didn’t pay it any mind.

Chapter 2
A while later, my phone rang. Annoyed, I silenced it and went back to sleep.
Then, there was a loud banging at the door.
I woke up, thinking it was some drunk.
I was about to check when the door opened, and Ethari stumbled in, looking disheveled.
I patted my chest.
“What’s going on?”
He staggered over, hugged me, and his body trembled slightly.
“Babe, there was an earthquake. I couldn’t reach you. I was so scared.”
He reeked of alcohol and perfume, making me nauseous.
I pushed him away casually.
“Your clothes are wet. Go take a shower.”
Ethan smiled and pinched my nose.
“Such a clean freak. I’ll go wash up.”
As soon as the water started running, I stared at my phone, stunned.
The earthquake happened at 1 a.m. He called at 1:15, and now it was 4 a.m.
It only takes an hour and a half to get from the south to the north of Bayview, but it took him three hours.
How ridiculous.
