As soon as I hung up, a figure appeared behind me.
Andrew’s brow furrowed.
“Where are you going? Caroline, who were you on the phone with? Who’s coming to pick you up from the airport?” he asked.
He had initially walked by but suddenly seemed interested, closing in on me.
He knew I had no family in this city, not even a friend.
For six years of marriage, I had sacrificed all my personal life for his company.
And now that his company was thriving, I willingly stepped back to help him have a child through IVF.
Living like this for love, I must be pretty pathetic.
I forced a smile. “Oh, nothing. I signed up for a tour group, but it got canceled because of the weather.”
Andrew scrutinized me as if trying to find signs of deceit in my expression.
When he didn’t see anything, he relaxed and walked closer.
“Caroline, once the baby is born, let’s take a month–long trip. How does that sound?”
His tone softened, and he even reached out as if to touch my belly.
I subtly stepped back, heading to the kitchen for a glass of water.
“We’ll talk about it later.”
Glancing at the time, I noticed he usually left for work around this hour, but today he lingered.
Hearing my indifferent tone, he frowned.
“Aren’t you the one who always wanted to take a month–long trip?”
I had wanted to go, to witness romance with my partner.
But now, it felt unnecessary.
Moreover, I could travel wherever I wanted on my own.
Just as I was about to respond, I heard a key turning in the lock outside.
Startled, I turned to see Bonnie, the charming secretary in a short, flirty dress, standing there with a big smile.

“Caroline, sorry to interrupt. I saw Mr. Jefferson was running late, so I came to pick him up. Hope you don’t mind?”
My gaze fell on the key in her hand.
It was the only spare key to our home.
“Andrew, you gave Bonnie the key?” I asked.
A flicker of embarrassment crossed Andrew’s face as he casually explained, “Bonnie is my secretary. She left some files at home, so I gave her a key to make it easier. It’s not a big deal, Caroline. We can talk about it when I get back.”
He shot Bonnie a glance, and the two of them walked out together.
I laughed at myself bitterly.
I had thought he was just infatuated with the thrill of a young secretary, but now it seemed he was serious.
While sipping coffee in the afternoon, my lawyer friend called.
He said he’d prepared the divorce agreement and sent it to my email to see if I needed any changes.
“It looks good. Thanks!” I quickly skimmed it. “Let me treat you to dinner when I get back to Sealand.”
Henry’s laughter came through the line.
“I’ll take that as a thank–you in advance, Ms. Swan.”
“Caroline, hope you have a happy divorce. Come back soon!”
I felt a warm tingle in my heart.
Henry Jones was my childhood friend. Six years ago, when I chose love over everything else, he was the first to voice his disapproval.
He said, “Andrew might be handsome, but you two aren’t a good match. It’s fine to date, but don’t be foolish enough to get married. And just look at him. He doesn’t seem like the type that would stay faithful. Don’t get fooled!”
But how could a woman lost in love think rationally?
I believed that while all men might cheat, Andrew would never.
He might be a bit poor, but he was grounded and ambitious.
With just a little help, he could run the business well.
And the deep gaze he had when he confessed his love under the cherry blossom trees? That moment was my memory forever.
But now, even that gaze seemed to fade away.
When I thought of Andrew, the first thing that came to mind was his impatience.

He always rushed to defend his secretary, hurling accusations my way.

Through the heavy rain, I noticed that Andrew’s car was still parked downstairs, not even starting.
Even if it was blurry, I could clearly see a couple inside, locked in an embrace kissing.
“Andrew, I got you all wrong,” I thought.
