During that year I was chasing Ethan, Nathan would often appear in front of me, badmouthing Ethan. Back then, I prepared breakfasts for Ethan, but he simply took them and gave them to Sophia. The day I caught him doing this, Nathan began shamelessly claiming all my future breakfasts.
“Not bad. Better than I expected,” was Nathan’s review back then. It was just a simple sandwich.
I agreed, and he held my door, stopping me from going inside.
“Amy, I remember you studied design before.”
His fingertips moved restlessly against each other. Surprisingly, I saw nervousness and hesitation in him.
“Amy, I want to redesign this apartment. Would you take a look?”
“I really liked your previous designs, Amy. I want you to start again.”
During those years with Ethan, I lost myself and my friends. This was the first time someone had said something like
this to me.
He stood before me, eyes full of expectation, reminding me of the previous Nathan.
He’d always speak with sarcasm, but looking back, it was more like frustration with me.
Several times, I caught a different look in his eyes. He asked me, “Is Ethan really that great?”
With my brain clouded by gratitude for being saved, I praised Ethan as the best man in the world.
In the moment of silence, Nathan’s fists clenched, his fingertips visibly tense. He gritted his teeth and asked once
more.
“Is Ethan really so wonderful? Are you still hung up on him?”
Coming back to the present, I saw his expression and laughed. That was the face of someone frustrated with me.
“Nathan, now you look like the person I used to know.”
I took the project brief from his hand and focused on the design for a while.
Some skills were rusty from lack of use, but I had the preliminary plan ready in a week.
I sent the design proposal to Nathan. The apartment next door was very quiet, and thinking about it, I realized I hadn’t seen Nathan for several days.
“Amy.”

“Amy, how long are you going to keep this up?”
Ethan’s messages were nonstop, I found them annoying and blocked him.
I closed my eyes, leaning against the sofa. The sound of keys turning next door made me immediately sit up straight.
My phone was still on the previous screen–Nathan hadn’t responded yet.
“Amy.”
The door was pushed open, and Ethan’s revolting face appeared.
My eyebrows furrowed. All trace of past fondness was gone.
“What are you doing here? How do you have a key?”
My gaze was intense. Ethan, with the superiority of someone in power, dangled the key.
He kept approaching, backing me into a corner.
“Amy, how could you still be so naive? How could he possibly be a match for me?”
“Do you think the Thornton family would allow him to be so entangled with my wife?”
He reached up to gently brush my cheek. I turned away stiffly.
He seemed to think my inability to hear made him more uninhibited. But I heard him–those words echoed in my
right ear.
Ethan backed me against the table edge, looking me up and down with a smirk. “So Nathan let you live in a place like this.”
“Seems like Nathan doesn’t care about you that much after all.”
“Ethan, leave my house now, or I’m calling the police.”
He wasn’t afraid, continuing pinning me against the table. “Amy, don’t forget, we’re still married.”
The man’s vicious expression didn’t last long because he soon lowered his head, begging my forgiveness.
Ethan took advantage of my hearing problem, kneeling before me with eyes full of false sincerity, promising me sweet nothings.
“Amy, I truly love you.”
“Come home with me, please.”
Unfortunately, I couldn’t hear a word he said.
Whatever he said, floating to my left ear was nothing but air.

Ethan wouldn’t leave, so I secretly reached behind me and called my emergency contact.
“Amy, I’ll send Sophia away, okay? There will be no more Sophia, only you, Amy.”
He typed out every word, but I continued to look at him impassively.
I knew Ethan had little patience. I was gambling, betting that someone would come.
“Amy!”
